Abstract

Review

The article, titled 'Estas algemas são minha morte' (These handcuffs are my death), delves into the complex experiences and perceptions of adolescents undergoing socio-educational measures at a Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS) in Goiânia, Brazil. The authors employ a robust mixed-methods approach, combining a comprehensive bibliographic review spanning 2005-2018 on adolescence, conflict with the law, and drug use, with a sociodemographic and health study derived from CAPS records. Crucially, the study also incorporates the analysis of discourses from two transdisciplinary group sessions involving seven participants, theoretically grounded in the works of Pichon-Rivière and Vigotski. This multifaceted methodology provides a strong foundation for exploring adolescent perspectives on infracional acts, drug addiction, and the efficacy of socio-educational interventions. The findings reveal significant insights into the intertwined nature of drug use and infracional acts, echoing established notions of risk factors and highlighting the specific psychosocial role drugs play in the lives of these adolescents. A particularly compelling aspect is the analysis of the emergent discourses within the group sessions, which are characterized by stereotyped and dichotomous understandings of social relations. Moreover, the adolescents' perception of socio-educational measures as analogous to penitence, directly resonant with the paper's poignant title, underscores a critical disconnect between intent and lived experience. Despite these challenging perceptions, the article firmly advocates for the value of the interventions, emphasizing the efficacy of playful approaches and collective dynamics in facilitating the elaboration of new meanings about their reality, thereby challenging moralistic postures and stereotypical narratives. This paper makes a valuable contribution to the understanding of vulnerable youth and the effectiveness of socio-educational interventions, moving beyond simplistic explanations to explore the nuanced discourses of adolescents. While the abstract strongly defends the intervention's positive impact, the full article would benefit from further elaboration on the specific mechanisms through which 'playful perspective' and 'collective dynamics' achieve their transformative potential. Detailing how these interventions specifically dismantle moralistic views and question stereotypes would enhance the practical applicability of the findings for practitioners. Overall, 'Estas algemas são minha morte' offers a critical and empathetic examination of a pressing social issue, providing crucial insights into the subjective realities of adolescents in conflict with the law and underscoring the vital role of humanistic, psychologically informed interventions.
