Abstract

Parenting style plays a crucial role in shaping children’s character and behavior. However, limited access to relevant knowledge often prevents parents from recognizing the type of parenting they practice. To address this issue, this study developed an Android-based application for determining parenting styles using the Scrum software development framework. The parenting style classification system was built by applying the Rule-Based Reasoning (RBR) method, which processed Pengguna questionnaire inputs into IF–THEN logical rules based on two primary psychological dimensions: control and warmth. The rules and assessment indicators were derived from expert knowledge obtained from Gantari Psychology Clinic. Based on the scores of these two dimensions, the system classified parenting styles into four categories: Authoritative (Democratic), Authoritarian, Permissive, and Neglectful. In addition, the application provided personalized parenting recommendations tailored to the child’s age (0–60 months) and the dominant parenting style identified. Functional testing of the system used the Black Box Testing method indicated that all core features operate effectively and in accordance with the system design. This application was expected to serve as a practical self-learning tool for parents to evaluate and improve their parenting practices, thereby supporting optimal child development.

Review

This paper presents a timely and highly relevant solution to a pervasive challenge: empowering parents with self-awareness regarding their parenting styles. By developing an Android-based application, the authors address the critical need for accessible knowledge on a topic that profoundly impacts child character and behavior. The choice of an Android platform ensures broad reach, making valuable insights available to a wide audience. The application's core objective to serve as a practical self-learning tool is commendable, aiming to improve parenting practices and support optimal child development, which aligns with significant public health and psychological objectives. The methodology adopted is well-articulated and conceptually sound. The Rule-Based Reasoning (RBR) method is effectively utilized to classify parenting styles, translating questionnaire inputs into clear IF-THEN logical rules. This approach, grounded in two primary psychological dimensions—control and warmth—provides a structured and transparent framework for assessment. Crucially, the rules and assessment indicators were derived from expert knowledge at Gantari Psychology Clinic, lending credibility to the classification system which categorizes styles into Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive, and Neglectful. The inclusion of personalized parenting recommendations, tailored to a child's age (0–60 months), significantly enhances the application's utility beyond mere classification, offering actionable guidance. The use of Scrum for development and Black Box Testing for functional validation ensures the system's design and operational efficacy. While the abstract highlights the successful functional testing of the application's core features, a full paper would benefit from further discussion on the validation process beyond system functionality. Specifically, details on pilot studies with target users, assessments of user experience (UX), and preliminary evaluations of the *effectiveness* of the personalized recommendations in influencing actual parenting behaviors would strengthen the findings. Nevertheless, this work offers a valuable contribution by providing an accessible, rule-based system for parenting style determination. The application holds significant promise as an educational resource, potentially fostering greater parental self-reflection and ultimately promoting healthier child development trajectories.
