The article, "(Re)conhecendo a sexualidade de homens adultos que cometeram ofensa sexual" (Re-cognizing the sexuality of adult men who committed sexual offense), addresses a highly sensitive and crucial topic within mental health and forensic psychology. The authors aim to explore the sexual development of adult men who have committed sexual offenses against children/adolescents, specifically tracing the trajectory where sexual expression becomes violent. This objective is highly relevant and timely, contributing to a deeper understanding of the complex etiologies behind such behaviors, which is essential for effective prevention and intervention strategies in public health contexts. The methodology involved a qualitative, documentary research design, utilizing the "linha da vida" (life history) instruments present in the medical records of participants in a psychosocial intervention program for sexual offenders at a public health unit. This approach provides a rich, albeit indirect, source of information regarding their sexual trajectories. The discussion was meticulously organized around several key themes, including sexual initiation, the impact of prejudice (gender and culture), prior experiences of sexual violence, the interplay between affect and sexuality, and sexual satisfaction, differentiating between common and discordant meanings. The findings shed light on the pervasive gender issues inherent in child sexual offense and identified potential sexual risk factors contributing to such offenses by adult men. A significant strength of this work lies in its qualitative approach to a population often studied purely through quantitative or criminological lenses, offering a valuable biopsychosocial perspective. By leveraging existing documentary data from intervention participants, the study gains access to introspective accounts that might be challenging to obtain otherwise. The identification of gender issues and specific sexual risk factors is particularly insightful, providing actionable knowledge for clinicians and policymakers. The explicit recommendation to adopt a broader and more comprehensive approach to sexuality in the care of this population underscores the practical implications of the research, emphasizing the need for interventions that move beyond mere risk management to address the underlying complexities of sexual development and expression. This article makes a pertinent contribution to the literature, highlighting critical areas for future research and clinical practice.
