The article titled "Psikoedukasi Pengenalan Gangguan Psikologis pada Lansia" addresses a highly pertinent and growing public health concern: the psychological well-being of the elderly population. The abstract effectively highlights the increasing demographic of seniors and the potential societal burden if their health, particularly mental health, is not adequately addressed. The authors present a community-based psychoeducation initiative targeting pre-elderly and elderly individuals (50 years and above) within the Persatuan Paguyuban Lanjut Usia (PPLU) Kelurahan Mlatibaru Kota Semarang, aiming to enhance their understanding of psychological disorders. This proactive approach to mental health literacy among seniors and their families is commendable and aligns with global efforts to promote healthy aging. The intervention described is a single three-hour psychoeducation session focusing on the recognition of psychological disorder symptoms. The methodology employed a traditional lecture format complemented by a question-and-answer session, allowing for some participant engagement. Evaluation of the program's immediate effectiveness was conducted using pre- and post-tests, a standard approach for assessing short-term knowledge acquisition. Sixty members of the PPLU participated, indicating a reasonable reach within the community group. While the abstract points to the effectiveness of the intervention in improving understanding, the brevity of the session and reliance on primarily didactic methods, as well as the lack of detail on the specific content covered or the types of psychological disorders discussed, suggest areas for potential expansion or clarification in a full report. The primary finding, that the psychoeducation effectively increased participants' understanding of psychological disorders in the elderly, is a positive outcome that underscores the value of such community-based initiatives. This improvement in mental health literacy can empower seniors and their families to identify potential issues earlier and seek appropriate help, potentially reducing stigma associated with mental health conditions. For future iterations or research, it would be beneficial to consider incorporating more interactive or experiential learning methods, extending the intervention over multiple sessions to allow for deeper engagement and retention, and including a follow-up assessment to gauge the long-term impact on knowledge and attitudes. Furthermore, exploring the translation of increased understanding into actual help-seeking behaviors would provide valuable insights into the broader impact of such programs. Overall, this work provides a valuable preliminary demonstration of an effective approach to addressing a critical public health need.
