Local history is a branch of history that is interesting to discuss the culture or history of a region. One of Jember's local historical relics is the stone gong inscription. The Batu Gong Inscription is located in Kaliputh, Rambipuji District. This inscription is thought to have existed since the 7th – 8th century AD. This inscription was discovered by Dutch archaeologist W.F. Stutterheim and H.R. Heekeren in 1933. The aim of this research is to analyze the various factors that caused this inscription to receive less attention and outline the historical context of the Batu Gong inscription in the development of local Jember history which reflects the culture and traditions of the community at that time. This research uses literature, observation and interview methods. Factors in which the stone gong inscriptions have been neglected are lack of attention from the government and society, lack of promotion and education, as well as lack of coordination and governance. It can be seen from the literature that the role of government and society is very necessary. The government can be a motivator, facilitator and dynamist in preserving the Batu Gong Inscription.
This paper addresses a crucial and often overlooked aspect of historical studies: the preservation and understanding of local heritage, specifically focusing on the Batu Gong Inscription in Jember. The authors' initiative to investigate a "neglected" historical relic from the 7th-8th century AD is commendable, highlighting the inscription's potential significance to Jember's early cultural landscape. The dual aims—to analyze the factors contributing to its neglect and to outline its historical context—are well-defined and promise to offer both academic insight into the region's past and practical recommendations for its future safeguarding. The identification of a specific, tangible artifact like the Batu Gong Inscription, with its documented discovery by notable archaeologists, provides a solid foundation for the research. The methodology, encompassing literature review, observation, and interviews, appears appropriate for a study of this nature, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of both the artifact's historical background and its contemporary status. The preliminary findings regarding the causes of neglect—lack of attention from government and society, insufficient promotion and education, and poor coordination/governance—resonate with common challenges in heritage management. Furthermore, the abstract's emphasis on the indispensable role of government as a motivator, facilitator, and dynamist in preservation efforts offers a practical and actionable dimension, moving beyond mere identification of problems to suggest concrete pathways for intervention and community engagement. While the abstract provides a strong overview, the full paper would benefit from elaborating on certain aspects. The claim that the inscription is "thought to have existed since the 7th – 8th century AD" prompts a need for detailed evidence in the main text regarding the epigraphic or archaeological basis for this dating. Furthermore, while factors of neglect are identified, the depth of analysis for each—supported by specific examples from observations and interviews—will be critical to fully substantiate the claims. The proposed outline of the inscription's historical context, and how it reflects "the culture and traditions of the community at that time," should also be rigorously developed, demonstrating how the inscription's content or form contributes to this understanding. A robust connection between the historical significance and the reasons for neglect would further strengthen the paper's overall argument.
