Psychological resilience plays a vital role in supporting athletes in overcoming anxiety that arises during competition. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between psychological resilience and anxiety during competition, and the extent to which psychological resilience affects the level of anxiety. The correlational method was applied in this study with a purposive sampling technique, involving 30 athletes from the Pencak Silat Training Center in Ponorogo as participants. Data were collected through a questionnaire that measured the scale of psychological resilience and competition anxiety. Data analysis using the product moment correlation test revealed a negative relationship with a correlation coefficient of -0.571 (r = -0.571). This finding indicates that the higher the psychological resilience, the lower the level of anxiety felt during competition. In addition, the results of the determination coefficient analysis showed that psychological resilience contributed 32.6% to the level of competition anxiety, while the remaining 67.4% was influenced by other variables not discussed in this study.
The study, "Hubungan Ketangguhan Mental dengan Kecemasan Bertanding pada Atlet Puslatcab Pencak Silat di Ponorogo," addresses a highly relevant topic in sports psychology: the interplay between psychological resilience and competition anxiety. The abstract clearly articulates the study's objective to assess this relationship and the extent of resilience's influence on anxiety. The core finding of a significant negative correlation (r = -0.571) between psychological resilience and competition anxiety among Pencak Silat athletes in Ponorogo is a valuable contribution, suggesting that higher resilience is associated with lower anxiety levels during competition. This finding reinforces existing literature on the protective role of psychological traits in performance contexts and offers specific insights within an underrepresented sport. Methodologically, the study employed a correlational design with a purposive sample of 30 Pencak Silat athletes. Data were collected via questionnaires measuring both psychological resilience and competition anxiety, and analyzed using product moment correlation and determination coefficient tests. While the approach is straightforward and appropriate for identifying relationships, several aspects warrant consideration. The sample size of 30, though common in specific niche athlete populations, is relatively small and might limit the generalizability of the findings beyond this specific group in Ponorogo. Furthermore, the reliance solely on self-report questionnaires, while practical, could introduce bias. The abstract clearly states that psychological resilience contributed 32.6% to competition anxiety, acknowledging that a substantial 67.4% is influenced by other unexamined variables, which is an honest and important limitation of the study's scope. The identified negative correlation offers significant practical implications for coaches and sports psychologists working with Pencak Silat athletes, suggesting that interventions aimed at enhancing psychological resilience could be effective in mitigating competition anxiety. To strengthen the overall contribution and address the study's limitations, future research could consider expanding the sample size and diversifying the athletic population to improve generalizability. Exploring the 67.4% of unexplained variance through multivariate analyses incorporating other psychological, physiological, and environmental factors would provide a more comprehensive understanding. Additionally, longitudinal studies or interventional designs could help establish causal pathways, moving beyond the correlational nature of the current study. Overall, this study provides a solid initial insight into a crucial area, laying groundwork for more extensive and nuanced investigations.
