Abstract

Women have an important role in the process of forming a new civilization, because it is from women that the new generation receives education. It is not surprising that the lack of progress of women influences whether or not a nation develops or progresses. In Indonesian history, women have had their own dynamics in their historical role; women's participation in all aspects of national and state life cannot be ignored. Even though the majority of women in Indonesia are under patriarchal domination, in line with the demands of the times and the real conditions of the surrounding environment, women are also required to play an active role in the public sector. This research uses a qualitative approach with document analysis methods as a data collection instrument.

Review

The study titled "Portraits of Women in the New Order Era" addresses a highly pertinent and historically significant subject. The abstract effectively highlights the foundational role of women in national development and civilization, establishing a broad rationale for the research. By focusing on women's dynamics and participation within the specific context of Indonesia's New Order, the research promises to offer valuable insights into a complex period marked by particular social and political structures. The acknowledgement of both patriarchal domination and the evolving demands for women's public engagement sets a promising stage for exploring the multifaceted experiences and representations of women during this era. Methodologically, the proposed qualitative approach utilizing document analysis is appropriate for uncovering historical narratives and representations. The strength lies in its potential to delve into nuanced "portraits" rather than simply quantifying participation. However, the abstract could benefit from greater specificity regarding its scope and analytical focus. While it broadly discusses women's importance, it lacks a clear articulation of *which* "portraits" will be examined (e.g., in media, official discourse, literature, personal accounts) and what specific research questions will guide this exploration. The introductory statements about women's general role, though valid, could be more directly linked to the specific problematic or gap this study aims to fill concerning the New Order period. Further, specifying the types of documents to be analyzed would enhance the abstract's clarity and demonstrate the feasibility of its proposed methodology. To strengthen the abstract and the overall research proposal, it is recommended that the authors more precisely define the analytical lens through which these "portraits" will be constructed and interpreted. Clarifying the specific objectives beyond a general exploration of women's roles during the New Order would be beneficial. For instance, will the study analyze how state ideology shaped women's roles, or how women negotiated these prescribed roles? What new insights will this research offer beyond existing scholarship on women in this period? Providing these details would not only sharpen the research's focus but also underscore its unique contribution to the historical and gender studies discourse, promising a rich and impactful investigation into a crucial aspect of Indonesian history.
