The Church as the People of God presupposes the active engagement of every member, especially within local communities such as parishes and stations. Women, as integral members of the Church, are likewise called to participate fully in parish life. This descriptive study examines the role of women in church ministry at the Maximilianus Maria Kolbe Parish specifically at the Landonanga Station in the Diocese of Ruteng by investigating the service tasks they perform, the significance of their ministries, parish responses to their contributions, how they understand their service as members of the People of God, and the sources of support that sustain their work. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews and document analysis. The findings reveal that women serve in parish and station leadership as committee members, although they have not yet assumed the highest council leadership position. They contribute across various parish commissions and engage in all five dimensions of church ministry liturgy, kerygma, diakonia, coinsonia, and martyria. Their service is positively received and acknowledged by both church authorities and the laity, yet they encounter challenges such as patriarchal cultural norms and the burden of dual responsibilities. The study concludes that while women already play a vital role in church ministry and enjoy considerable support, they continue to face significant obstacles. This research thus enriches our understanding of women's contributions to local church life, highlighting both the enablers and barriers that shape their ministry.
This descriptive study offers a timely and relevant examination of the roles of women in church ministry within a specific Indonesian context, namely the Landonanga Station of the Maximilianus Maria Kolbe Parish in the Diocese of Ruteng. The paper's stated objective is to investigate the active engagement of women, exploring the service tasks they perform, the perceived significance of their ministries, the parish's response to their contributions, their self-understanding as members of the People of God, and the support systems underpinning their work. Employing a qualitative research approach, the authors gathered data through interviews and document analysis, thereby providing an in-depth perspective on local church life. The research effectively illuminates the multifaceted contributions of women, revealing their significant involvement in various aspects of church life. Findings indicate that women actively serve in parish and station leadership committees, even if not yet in the highest council positions, and are engaged across all five dimensions of church ministry: liturgy, kerygma, diakonia, coinsonia, and martyria. A notable strength is the acknowledgement that their service is widely recognized and positively received by both church authorities and the laity. Crucially, the study provides a nuanced picture by also identifying persistent challenges, particularly patriarchal cultural norms and the burden of dual responsibilities, which add depth to our understanding of the enablers and barriers shaping women's ministry in this particular setting. While the study successfully enriches our understanding of women's vital roles and the support they receive, it also implicitly opens avenues for further exploration. Future research could delve deeper into the specific mechanisms through which patriarchal norms manifest and how women actively strategize to navigate or challenge these structures. Additionally, comparative studies across different parishes, dioceses, or even denominations could provide broader insights into the universality or particularity of the identified challenges and forms of support. Overall, this research is a valuable contribution to the fields of religious studies and gender studies, offering essential empirical data for scholars and church leaders committed to fostering more inclusive and equitable participation within faith communities.
