Abstract

Children with special needs (ABK) often face various challenges that require extra attention and support from their families. This study aims to determine the role of families in supporting the welfare of ABK at SLB Kasih Ibu in Dolok Masihul District. The research method used is qualitative descriptive research. Data collection was conducted through interviews, observation, and documentation. There were nine informants in this study. The results showed that the family plays a role in improving the welfare of children with special needs through several main aspects, namely: family resilience, which includes physical, social, and psychological resilience, which is fulfilled through basic needs, religious values, communication, commitment, and emotional management. The family provides personal support in the form of information, emotional support, education, and daily assistance. Good family relationships with effective communication and positive reinforcement, as well as the lack of community capacity in serving children with special needs. The welfare of children with special needs is fulfilled through basic needs, care, nurturing, and guidance from their families. Families also play a role in meeting the basic needs of children with special needs and protecting them from violence, discrimination, and unfair treatment, thereby creating a safe and supportive environment for the optimal development of children with special needs..

Review

This paper presents a timely and crucial investigation into the indispensable role of families in fostering the welfare of children with special needs (ABK) at SLB Kasih Ibu in Dolok Masihul. The study's focus on a specific local context, coupled with its qualitative descriptive methodology, is well-suited for exploring the intricate dynamics of family support. By aiming to delineate how families navigate and contribute to the well-being of ABK, the research addresses a significant gap in understanding the practical and emotional support structures essential for this vulnerable population, making it a valuable contribution to the field of special education and family studies. The abstract effectively highlights several key findings that underscore the multifaceted nature of family support. It identifies family resilience—encompassing physical, social, and psychological dimensions—as a foundational element, nurtured through basic needs provision, religious values, effective communication, commitment, and emotional management. The study also pinpoints the crucial role of personal support, including information sharing, emotional backing, educational assistance, and daily care. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of robust family relationships, positive reinforcement, and the family’s function in fulfilling basic needs, caregiving, nurturing, guidance, and protection against discrimination. The acknowledgment of the limitations in community capacity to serve ABK adds a vital contextual layer, underscoring the intensified burden and responsibility placed upon families. While the abstract provides a strong overview of the family's roles, a full paper would ideally delve deeper into the interplay between these elements and the specific challenges families encounter in consistently providing this comprehensive support, especially given the identified lack of external community capacity. Exploring the mechanisms through which religious values or emotional management are practically applied and how families adapt their strategies in the face of resource limitations would further enrich the findings. Nevertheless, this study's clear articulation of family contributions to ABK welfare offers significant implications for developing more targeted and effective family-centered intervention programs and policies, ultimately advocating for a more supportive environment for children with special needs.
