Abstract

Technology has rapidly developed across various fields, including education, which has been significantly impacted by technological advancements. The development of computer technology can be utilized to assist in creating effective learning media. This research aims to develop web-based interactive learning media using an ethnomathematics approach for teaching flat-sided space shapes to eighth-grade junior high school students. The development model employed in this study is the 4-D or 4-P model, which was modified into three stages: the definition stage (define), the design stage (design), and the development stage (develop). The research subjects consisted of 15 students from SMP Swasta Budi Agung Medan. The instruments used in this research included expert material assessment questionnaires, expert media assessment questionnaires, and student response questionnaires. The findings revealed that the developed web-based interactive learning media with an ethnomathematics approach received a score of 93% from expert media validators, indicating that the media is highly valid. Expert material validators gave a score of 87%, classifying it as very good or highly valid. Meanwhile, the student response assessment showed an average score of 86%, indicating that the media was highly engaging and met the required criteria.

The research successfully addresses a significant need in modern education by integrating rapidly evolving technology with a culturally relevant pedagogical approach. The combination of web-based interactive media and ethnomathematics for teaching complex geometric concepts like flat-sided space shapes holds considerable promise for enhancing student engagement and understanding, particularly for eighth-grade junior high school students. The robust validation scores from expert media validators (93%), expert material validators (87%), and student responses (86%) strongly support the media's validity and perceived high quality. While the study's approach is commendable, there are a few areas for further consideration. The abstract states the use of a modified 4-D or 4-P development model, truncated to three stages: define, design, and develop. A clearer justification for omitting the "disseminate" stage, particularly in relation to the overall research objectives of *development*, would strengthen the methodological clarity. Additionally, while the sample size of 15 students from SMP Swasta Budi Agung Medan is acceptable for initial development and validation of the media's attractiveness, it is quite small and limits the generalizability of the student response findings. Future iterations or subsequent studies could benefit from larger and more diverse samples to further ascertain the media's broader applicability and impact. Overall, this research makes a valuable contribution to the field of educational technology and mathematics education. It effectively demonstrates the feasibility and high quality of developing interactive learning media that not only leverages technology but also embeds cultural context through an ethnomathematics approach. The developed media shows strong potential to be an engaging and effective tool for teaching geometry. Moving forward, the natural next step for this work would be to conduct efficacy studies that measure the impact of this highly validated media on actual student learning outcomes and achievement, perhaps comparing it to traditional teaching methods or other digital tools in a more robust experimental design.
