Abstract

Hypertension is an increase in systolic blood pressure of more than 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure of more than 90 mmHg. Hypertension is not only at high risk of suffering from heart disease, but also suffering from other diseases such as nerve, kidney, and blood vessel diseases and the higher the blood pressure the greater the risk, Signs and symptoms of hypertension that are often felt are dizziness, sleep disturbances, blurred vision, and headaches. One of the non-pharmacological treatments that can be done for hypertension sufferers is progressive muscle relaxation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss progressive muscle relaxation therapy for lowering blood pressure in hypertensive patients. The writing method uses a descriptive design with a nursing process approach. The results of the writing show that there is a decrease in blood pressure after progressive muscle relaxation therapy is carried out for 5 days, the results obtained before 150/80 mmHg and after 120/80 mmHg.

Review

This paper presents an interesting case study exploring the application of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) in a hypertensive patient, Ny. N, within a community health setting. The abstract effectively highlights the significant public health burden of hypertension and the potential for non-pharmacological interventions like PMR to address its symptoms, including those that might lead to acute pain. While the title specifically points to "acute pain nursing problems," the abstract's stated purpose shifts focus to "lowering blood pressure," suggesting a dual or perhaps evolving aim that warrants clarification. Nevertheless, the initiative to explore practical, accessible interventions for chronic conditions in primary care is commendable. The methodology described is a descriptive design utilizing a nursing process approach, applied to a single patient. The reported outcome, a reduction in blood pressure from 150/80 mmHg to 120/80 mmHg after five days of PMR, is a noteworthy observation. This finding, though derived from a single case, provides an initial indication of PMR's potential benefits. However, the descriptive nature and single-subject design inherently limit the generalizability and statistical robustness of these results. Further details on the specific steps of the nursing process approach, how PMR was delivered, and the assessment of "acute pain" (if it remained a primary focus) would have strengthened the methodological transparency. In conclusion, this paper offers a valuable preliminary insight into the practical application and immediate effects of progressive muscle relaxation in a hypertensive patient. While the promising blood pressure reduction observed is encouraging, it must be interpreted within the context of a case study. Future research would significantly benefit from a clearer articulation of the primary outcome (e.g., pain reduction versus blood pressure control), the inclusion of larger sample sizes, and potentially comparative designs to establish the efficacy and generalizability of PMR in managing hypertension and its associated symptoms. This work serves as a useful foundation for more rigorous investigations into non-pharmacological interventions in hypertension management.
