Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of the Housewives Group in Minasa Baji Village, Maros Regency, in managing home gardens through sustainable urban farming. The program was implemented through counseling and field practice methods, which consisted of three stages: program socialization, training and field practice on vegetable cultivation in home gardens and the production of organic fertilizer from household waste, and program evaluation. The evaluation results were analyzed quantitatively and interpreted using the N-Gain method. The results of this community service activity showed an increase of 54.1% in the partners’ knowledge and skills in utilizing home garden areas for cultivating vegetables to meet family needs. In addition, the activity involved the active participation of housewives in processing communal household waste into organic fertilizer that can be used by the partner group or surrounding residents.

Review

This abstract introduces a highly relevant community service program focused on empowering housewives towards food self-sufficiency through sustainable urban farming in home gardens. The title clearly articulates the program's ambitious yet practical goals, and the abstract effectively outlines the "what" and "why" of the initiative in Minasa Baji Village, Maros Regency. Addressing critical issues such as local food security, women's empowerment, and sustainable resource management, the program’s focus on leveraging underutilized home garden spaces is particularly timely and impactful in many developing contexts. The methodology described appears robust for a community service intervention, employing a structured approach combining counseling and field practice across three distinct stages: socialization, practical training, and evaluation. A notable strength lies in the dual focus on vegetable cultivation for family needs and the innovative production of organic fertilizer from household waste, demonstrating a holistic approach to sustainability and resource circularity. The quantitative evaluation, utilizing the N-Gain method, provides a clear measure of impact, reporting a significant 54.1% increase in participants' knowledge and skills. This, coupled with the reported active participation in waste processing, strongly indicates the program's success in achieving its immediate objectives. Overall, this initiative represents a commendable effort in fostering practical skills and promoting self-reliance within the target community. The documented increase in knowledge and skills, alongside the active engagement in sustainable waste management, highlights the program's effectiveness in contributing to both household food security and environmental stewardship. For a full publication, further details on the specific types of vegetables cultivated, the challenges encountered during implementation, and a deeper exploration of the long-term sustainability and potential for economic benefits beyond immediate family consumption would enhance the paper's contribution. Nevertheless, the abstract clearly demonstrates a well-executed program with promising short-term outcomes that could serve as a valuable model for similar community-based interventions.
