Abstract

Suomalaisten Venäjä-kuvista on keskusteltu melko paljon, minkä seurauksena julkisten keskustelufoorumeiden Venäjä-keskustelut kääntyvät usein käsittelemään itseään. Pitkälle kehittyneissä Venäjä-keskusteluissa on tunnistettavissa pitkä historia: Venäläisyys on ollut lähes koko suomalaisuuden itsetietoisuuden historian ajan keskeinen ”toinen” Suomen kansalliselle identiteetille. Tämä näkyy myös Pohjois-Karjalassa, missä Venäjän läheisyys on osa arkipäivää. Moni maakuntalehti Karjalaisessa ja internetin Suomi24-keskustelufoorumillaVenäjä-keskusteluun osallistunut piti itäistä rajanaapuria lähiperspektiivissä mahdollisuutena, mutta suuressa mittakaavassa uhkana. Venäjä-kuvien pelkoon liittyvistä piirteissä ilmenivät yhtäältä vieraus, erilaisuus, tuntemattomuus sekä toisaalta vaihtelevissa määrissä kyseenalaistetut historian ja ajankohtaisuutisoinnin tulkinnat.
