Ornamen memiliki peran penting dalam membentuk identitas ruang, karena tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai elemen dekoratif namun juga sebagai media visual yang dapat mengkomunikasikan budaya, sejarah, dan juga nilai simbolis. Penelitian ini membahas peran ornamen sebagai pembentuk identitas ruang melalui studi komparatif antara Gedung Kesenian (GK) Sunan Ambu yang terletak di ISBI Bandung dan Radjawali Semarang Cultural Center (RSCC). Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif komparatif dengan pendekatan analisis visual dan interpretatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada GK Sunan Ambu, peran ornamen cenderung fungsional sehingga belum dapat sepenuhnya menghadirkan identitas dari karakter “Sunan Ambu” yang merepresentasikan budaya Sunda. Sedangkan pada RSCC penerapan ornamen dengan bentuk geometris dan simbolis yang menyerupai sayap rajawali serta penggunaan motif batik parang pada fasad bangunan telah dapat menghadirkan identitas “Radjawali” yang khas dan berkesan sehingga mudah diingat oleh pengunjung. Dengan demikian, ornamen memiliki peran yang signifikan dalam membentuk identitas ruang melalui integrasi fungsi estetika, simbolik, serta kultural yang dikemas dalam satu kesatuan desain ornamen yang bermakna, sehingga dapat menghadiran pengalaman yang berkesan bagi pengunjung.
This paper presents a compelling comparative study on the role of ornaments in shaping spatial identity, focusing on the Gedung Kesenian Sunan Ambu and Radjawali Semarang Cultural Center. The research effectively highlights the multi-faceted function of ornaments beyond mere decoration, positioning them as vital communicators of culture, history, and symbolic values within a built environment. Employing a qualitative comparative methodology with visual and interpretive analysis, the study offers a well-structured approach to examining how design elements contribute to the distinct character and memorability of cultural spaces. The choice of two contrasting Indonesian cultural centers provides a rich empirical basis for exploring this significant topic. The findings eloquently differentiate the effectiveness of ornamental application in the two case studies. While Sunan Ambu's ornaments are observed as predominantly functional, thus falling short in fully embodying the "Sunan Ambu" and Sundanese cultural identity, Radjawali SCC stands out for its successful integration of geometric and symbolic forms, notably the eagle wings and Batik Parang motifs. This contrast powerfully illustrates how deliberate and integrated design choices can create a strong, memorable identity that resonates with visitors. The research successfully demonstrates that ornaments, when thoughtfully conceived to integrate aesthetic, symbolic, and cultural functions, transcend their decorative purpose to become crucial identity markers. In conclusion, this research makes a valuable contribution to the understanding of architectural semiotics and cultural identity in design. It underscores the critical need for cultural centers to move beyond purely functional ornamentation towards a more holistic design approach that imbues spaces with deeper meaning and connection to their heritage. The paper’s insights have significant implications for architects, designers, and cultural institutions in shaping environments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also powerfully expressive of their unique cultural narratives, ultimately enhancing the visitor experience and reinforcing collective memory.
