Review

This paper presents a highly commendable community engagement initiative focused on enhancing literacy skills among children in the Panti Asuhan Kuala Lumpur Rumah Titian Kaseh through the medium of storytelling. Addressing the developmental needs of children in an orphanage setting is profoundly important, and the program's objectives—to improve literacy, broaden knowledge, enrich character, and develop communication and self-expression—are holistic and impactful. The selection of storytelling as the core methodology is particularly astute, leveraging its inherent power to engage, educate, and foster a love for learning in a culturally resonant manner. The abstract outlines several well-considered strategies for optimizing literacy, including the selection of age-appropriate stories, interactive engagement, the use of visual and multimedia aids, creating a supportive literacy environment, training caregivers, and providing feedback. These practical steps indicate a thoughtful and comprehensive approach to intervention design and implementation. The reported outcome, a notable "antusiasme anak-anak dalam berliterasi" (children's enthusiasm for literacy), is a positive and crucial first indicator of engagement and receptiveness to learning. This enthusiasm is foundational for sustained literacy development and suggests the program successfully captured the children's interest. While the abstract clearly articulates the program's aims and operational strategies, it would benefit from a more detailed exposition of the research methodology and a more robust presentation of findings beyond general enthusiasm. For future reporting, incorporating specific metrics related to literacy skill improvement (e.g., pre- and post-intervention assessments of reading comprehension, vocabulary, or narrative abilities), along with qualitative data from participants and caregivers, would significantly strengthen the empirical claims. Detailing the duration of the program and the number of participants would also provide valuable context. Despite these suggestions for enhancing empirical rigor, this project represents a valuable and heartening effort to foster education and personal development within a vulnerable community.
