Abstract

Introduction Normal childbirth is the process of delivering the fetus that occurs during pregnancy. The labor process is a complex stage as it involves saving two lives. A full-term pregnancy is defined as a gestational age of 37–42 weeks, with spontaneous delivery in a cephalic (head-first) presentation lasting approximately 18 hours, without any complications for either the mother or the baby. The purpose of this study is to provide physiological intranatal midwifery care to Mrs. “S”, GIII PII A0. Method used in this study is a case study approach following the 7 steps of Varney. Results of the case study on Mrs. “S”, a 31-year-old woman, showed that the normal labor care proceeded without any problems, indicating that the management provided was in accordance with normal delivery procedures during stages I–IV. The baby was born spontaneously/normally in good condition, and the mother's general condition was also good, with no complications during labor or postpartum. Conclusion, the care provided went smoothly and effectively, with no identified gaps. The midwife played a role in providing care in accordance with her competencies and authority.

Review

This paper presents a descriptive account of midwifery care for a multiparous woman experiencing a physiological intranatal period. The focus on normal childbirth, a cornerstone of midwifery practice, is highly relevant, particularly in documenting successful clinical management in specific regional settings like Haji Hospital Makassar. The study aims to detail the provision of physiological intranatal midwifery care to Mrs. “S,” providing a focused examination of a standard clinical scenario. While the title is quite specific, it clearly sets the expectation for a detailed, perhaps even didactic, exploration of routine excellent care. The methodology, a case study approach employing Varney's 7 steps, is appropriate for documenting individual patient care and outcomes within a clinical context. The abstract effectively summarizes the positive findings: Mrs. “S,” a 31-year-old GIII PII A0 woman at 39 weeks 2 days, experienced an uncomplicated labor and birth, managed according to standard procedures through all four stages. Both mother and baby demonstrated good health with no reported complications during labor or postpartum. This provides valuable assurance that competent, evidence-based midwifery care can lead to optimal outcomes for physiological births in this setting. While the conclusion that the care was "smooth and effective, with no identified gaps" is commendable from a clinical perspective for the individual patient, it is important to acknowledge the inherent limitations of a single case study for broader research implications. The paper appears to function more as a best practice illustration or a clinical audit rather than a study generating generalizable knowledge or novel insights. To enhance its academic contribution, future work building on such cases could benefit from a more critical reflection on the "no identified gaps" assertion, perhaps exploring potential challenges or variations in care, or comparing outcomes with different management approaches. Expanding to multiple cases or incorporating a qualitative exploration of the midwife's decision-making process would also significantly strengthen the research value.
