Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the most common and deadly types of cancer among women, including in Indonesia, with an increasing incidence rate. This study aims to understand the coping mechanisms used by women with breast cancer in Kupang City in dealing with the disease. The method used in the research is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. Data collection techniques were carried out by in-depth interviews with five main informants who were women with breast cancer, as well as six supporting informants consisting of parents, husband, and psychologists. The results showed that the coping mechanisms applied by informants included problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, and meaning-focused coping. Informants make efforts to seek treatment both medical and traditional, and apply a healthy diet as part of the coping mechanism. In addition, social support from the family plays an important role in increasing the enthusiasm and motivation of informants to fight the disease. The Health Office is expected to integrate the results of this study in developing policies and support programs for breast cancer patients, as well as increasing public awareness about the importance of social support and healthy coping mechanisms for women with breast cancer.

Review

This study tackles a highly relevant and critical issue: the coping mechanisms employed by women battling breast cancer, a disease with a concerningly rising incidence in Indonesia and worldwide. By focusing on women in Kupang City, the research provides a valuable localized insight into this global challenge. The methodological choice of a qualitative, phenomenological approach is commendable, as it is perfectly suited to explore the complex, lived experiences of individuals facing severe illness, yielding rich, in-depth understanding. The robustness of the data collection, involving both main informants (patients) and a diverse group of supporting informants (family, psychologists), further strengthens the credibility and comprehensive nature of the findings. The research effectively identifies a broad spectrum of coping strategies, categorizing them into problem-focused, emotion-focused, and meaning-focused approaches. This multi-dimensional understanding reveals how women navigate their diagnosis through various efforts, including actively pursuing both conventional medical and traditional treatments, alongside adopting healthy dietary practices. A particularly impactful finding is the pivotal role of family social support, which emerges as a critical factor in significantly boosting the enthusiasm and motivation of patients to confront their illness. This highlights the indispensable psychosocial dimension of cancer care, demonstrating how external support can profoundly influence internal resilience. The implications of this study are significant and offer clear directives for practical application. The recommendation for the Health Office to integrate these findings into the development of policies and support programs is particularly pertinent, suggesting a direct translation of academic research into actionable public health strategies. Moreover, the emphasis on increasing public awareness regarding the importance of social support and healthy coping mechanisms for breast cancer patients is crucial for cultivating a more empathetic and effective care environment. This research thus not only deepens our academic understanding of illness adaptation but also provides a vital foundation for targeted interventions aimed at enhancing the well-being of women impacted by breast cancer.
