This paper addresses the issue of gentle maintenance of vegetation along watercourses, as discussed on the occasion of the Study Day “The multifunctional river park of the Pesa landscapes – Strategies for use and enhancement”, during the session on “Quality and ecological functionality,” held on February 6, 2024 in Scandicci. With reference to riparian vegetation, in particular of the Pesa river and other Tuscan rivers, the ecosystem services provided, the characteristics of the different types of plants and the management interventions to ensure hydraulic safety and river quality will be discussed.
The paper "Manutenzione gentile della vegetazione ripariale. Il caso di studio del fiume Pesa" addresses a highly relevant and timely topic concerning the sustainable management of riparian ecosystems. The focus on "gentle maintenance" immediately signals an approach that seeks to balance human intervention, particularly for hydraulic safety, with the preservation and enhancement of ecological quality and functionality. Contextualizing the paper within the discussions of a dedicated Study Day, "The multifunctional river park of the Pesa landscapes," further underscores its practical grounding and engagement with contemporary environmental discourse, specifically regarding Tuscan river systems. This introduction effectively sets the stage for a paper that promises to explore critical aspects of riverine health and management. From the abstract, the paper's strengths appear to lie in its comprehensive scope, encompassing ecosystem services, plant typology, and management interventions. The explicit mention of ecosystem services provided by riparian vegetation is crucial, as it highlights the multifaceted benefits beyond mere aesthetic value or erosion control, reinforcing the argument for a nuanced, "gentle" approach. By referencing the Pesa river as a case study, with applicability to other Tuscan rivers, the paper demonstrates both specific local relevance and broader regional implications. The intention to discuss how management interventions can ensure both hydraulic safety and river quality is a particularly strong point, addressing a common tension in river management by proposing an integrated, ecologically sensitive perspective. While the abstract effectively outlines the themes to be discussed, it currently functions more as an extended table of contents or a session summary rather than a concise overview of research findings. A key area for improvement in the full paper will be the clear articulation of its methodology: Is this a literature review, a synthesis of expert opinions from the Study Day, a case study analysis with empirical data, or a policy recommendation paper? The abstract would greatly benefit from hinting at specific insights, results, or novel contributions derived from these discussions, rather than simply stating what "will be discussed." For instance, outlining *what specific gentle maintenance strategies* were identified, or *what particular ecosystem services* were prioritized, would enhance its scientific contribution and demonstrate concrete outcomes beyond mere discourse. The reviewer looks forward to seeing how these complex discussions are translated into actionable and evidence-based recommendations in the full text.
