Abstract

This study aims to examine the interconnection of these meanings as a unified semantic structure using Toshihiko Izutsu’s Qur’anic semantic approach. This qualitative library research gathers data from tafsir works, Arabic dictionaries, and literature related to Izutsu’s semantic theory. The findings reveal that the basic meaning of qaşd as-sabīl is “the intended purpose of a path,” which, in its semantic relations, may refer to the straight path, salvation, guidance, Islamic law, and others. Historically, the meaning evolved from a general context (pre-Qur’anic), to more theological and specific (Qur’anic), and then to interpretive and contextual meanings (post-Qur’anic). The worldview behind this term shifted from general life purposes to the mission of conveying Islamic teachings. The diversity of interpretations is due to a structured relationship between its core meaning and its relational meanings shaped by semantic networks, historical context, and worldview constructions. Therefore, Izutsu’s semantic approach proves effective in revealing the complex and profound dimensions of qaşd as-sabīl in the Qur’an.

Review

The submitted study, "Makna Qaşd as-Sabīl dalam Al-Qur’an: Analisis Semantik Toshihiko Izutsu," undertakes an important semantic investigation into the concept of *qaşd as-sabīl* within the Qur'an. Utilizing Toshihiko Izutsu’s renowned Qur’anic semantic approach, the research aims to unravel the intricate layers of meaning and their interconnections, forming a unified semantic structure. Employing a qualitative library research methodology, the author effectively draws upon a diverse range of sources, including classical tafsir works, Arabic dictionaries, and scholarly literature pertaining to Izutsu’s semantic theory, to build a comprehensive analytical framework. The abstract clearly articulates the core finding that the basic meaning of *qaşd as-sabīl* is “the intended purpose of a path,” which branches out into significant relational meanings such as the straight path, salvation, guidance, and Islamic law. A particular strength highlighted is the historical tracing of the term's semantic evolution. The study meticulously demonstrates how *qaşd as-sabīl* transitioned from a broader, general context in the pre-Qur'anic era, to acquiring more theological and specific connotations within the Qur'an itself, eventually expanding into diverse interpretive and contextual meanings in the post-Qur'anic period. This historical trajectory is intrinsically linked to a significant shift in worldview, moving from general life purposes to the profound mission of conveying Islamic teachings. The research adeptly explains the observed diversity in interpretations as a structured relationship between the core meaning and its relational counterparts, all shaped by complex semantic networks, historical contexts, and constructed worldviews. This meticulous analysis underscores the efficacy of Izutsu’s semantic approach in uncovering the multifaceted and profound dimensions inherent in a crucial Qur'anic term. Overall, this study presents a robust and insightful contribution to Qur'anic studies and Islamic semantics. By applying Izutsu's sophisticated methodology, the author successfully illuminates the nuanced layers of *qaşd as-sabīl*, moving beyond surface-level translations to reveal its deep theological and practical implications. The clarity with which the abstract outlines the research question, methodology, key findings, and their implications suggests a well-structured and thoroughly executed investigation. This work is highly valuable for scholars interested in the semantic evolution of Qur'anic terms, the application of linguistic theories to religious texts, and a deeper understanding of fundamental Islamic concepts, providing a solid foundation for further research into the broader semantic fields of guidance and purpose in the Islamic tradition.
