Abstract

We are excited to announce an important update regarding the licensing policy of articles published in the Journal of Hypermedia & Technology-Enhanced Learning (J-HyTEL). Starting from Vol. 3 No. 1 (2025), all articles in the journal will be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). This update will apply to all articles published from Vol. 3 No. 1 (2025) onwards. Articles published in Vol. 1 No. 1 (2023) to Vol. 2 No. 3 (2024) will remain under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA). What Does This Mean? Under the new CC BY 4.0 license, readers are free to: Share: Copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format for any purpose, even commercially. Adapt: Remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially. The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms. Key Changes: Attribution: You must give appropriate credit to the original author(s) and J-HyTEL. This includes providing a link to the license and indicating if any changes were made. You may do this in any reasonable manner, but not in a way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use of the material. No Additional Restrictions: You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits. Why the Change? This move is intended to provide greater flexibility for both authors and readers. The CC BY 4.0 license allows for a wider distribution of knowledge, encourages collaboration, and supports innovation while allowing commercial use under the condition of proper attribution. What You Need to Do: For authors: If you have already published with J-HyTEL, there is no need to take any action. Articles published under CC BY-SA will remain under that license. However, any new submissions from Vol. 3 No. 1 (2025) onwards will be published under the new CC BY 4.0 license. For readers: You can now freely share, reuse, and adapt published content, provided you give proper attribution as specified under the CC BY 4.0 license. Review

This announcement from the Journal of Hypermedia & Technology-Enhanced Learning (J-HyTEL) details a significant update to its licensing policy, transitioning from the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0) to the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). This change will apply to all articles published from Vol. 3 No. 1 (2025) onwards, with previously published content (Vol. 1 No. 1, 2023 to Vol. 2 No. 3, 2024) remaining under the original CC BY-SA license. The clarity of the announcement, specifying the effective date and differentiating between new and existing content, is commendable and ensures a smooth transition for both authors and readers. The shift to CC BY 4.0 represents a pivotal move towards more expansive open access. By removing the "ShareAlike" condition, J-HyTEL is enabling greater flexibility for the reuse and adaptation of its published material. This means readers are now free to share, adapt, and even build upon the content for any purpose, including commercial endeavors, provided proper attribution is given to the original author(s) and J-HyTEL. The journal articulates sound reasons for this change, citing increased flexibility for authors and readers, wider knowledge distribution, encouragement of collaboration, and support for innovation, all while maintaining the critical requirement of attribution. Overall, J-HyTEL's adoption of the CC BY 4.0 license is a highly positive development for the journal and the broader scholarly community. It aligns with best practices in open science, reducing barriers to the reuse of academic work and fostering a more open and collaborative research environment. The announcement clearly outlines the implications for both authors and readers, ensuring that all stakeholders understand their rights and responsibilities. This strategic decision by the International Editorial Board of J-HyTEL is a commendable step towards maximizing the impact and reach of the research it publishes, truly embodying the spirit of open access and knowledge sharing.
