Abstract

Abstract: This study explores the relationship between Big Five personality dimensions and aesthetic preferences specifically in music and visual arts among teachers and students at SMK Perguruan Cikini. Using a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews involving 18 participants (8 teachers, 10 students) and thematic analysis Braun & Clarke, three main themes emerged: art as emotional regulation, personality expression through aesthetic preference, and the role of aesthetic taste in shaping aesthetic self. Openness to experience was the strongest predictor of aesthetic exploration in late adolescents, while conscientiousness governed art's functional role in adults. These findings contribute to the limited body of qualitative research on personality and aesthetic preference in Indonesian vocational education contexts. Review

This study offers a valuable qualitative exploration into the intricate relationship between Big Five personality dimensions and aesthetic preferences in music and visual arts, focusing on teachers and students within an Indonesian vocational education context. Utilizing semi-structured interviews with 18 participants and Braun & Clarke's thematic analysis, the research successfully identified three compelling themes: art's role in emotional regulation, the expression of personality through aesthetic choices, and the profound impact of aesthetic taste on shaping the "aesthetic self." The finding that openness to experience strongly predicts aesthetic exploration in late adolescents, while conscientiousness governs art's functional role in adults, provides nuanced insights into age-related differences in aesthetic engagement. The authors are commended for tackling a gap in qualitative research on this topic, particularly within the specific cultural and educational landscape of Indonesia. The methodological choice of a qualitative approach is particularly appropriate for delving into the subjective and multifaceted nature of aesthetic preference and its personal significance. The use of thematic analysis, a robust and widely recognized qualitative method, enhances the credibility of the findings by ensuring systematic data interpretation. The emergent themes—emotional regulation, personality expression, and the aesthetic self—offer a rich, detailed understanding that goes beyond mere correlational data, providing a deeper insight into the psychological functions and personal meaning of art engagement. Furthermore, the differentiated findings regarding openness and conscientiousness across age groups (adolescents vs. adults) represent a significant contribution, suggesting developmental variations in how personality traits manifest in aesthetic exploration and utility. While the study provides rich qualitative insights, certain aspects could be further elaborated or considered for future research. The relatively small sample size, though typical for qualitative studies, inherently limits the generalizability of the findings to the broader population of Indonesian vocational teachers and students. Future research might consider a larger, perhaps mixed-methods approach, to corroborate these qualitative insights with quantitative data, thereby strengthening the empirical claims. Additionally, a deeper theoretical discussion on the nuances of the "aesthetic self" within the Indonesian cultural context, or how the specific characteristics of vocational education might influence these relationships, could further enrich the study's contributions. Despite these considerations, this paper makes a significant and well-executed contribution to the understanding of personality and aesthetic preferences.
