Abstract

Review

This literature review, titled "Literature Review Inovasi, Analisis Kinerja dan Prospek Sel Bahan Bakar Untuk Aplikasi Maritim di Indonesia," provides a timely and relevant examination of fuel cell technology within the context of sustainable maritime transport. The authors critically assess Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) as a promising alternative to conventional fossil fuel engines, highlighting their high efficiency and low emissions crucial for the global clean energy transition, particularly within the Indonesian maritime sector. Drawing insights from over 19 scientific journals published between 2019 and 2023, the review comprehensively covers advancements in PEMFC membrane materials, catalysts, and their practical implementation scenarios in Indonesia. The review effectively elucidates the significant potential of PEMFC technology to revolutionize maritime propulsion. It underscores how continuous innovation in material science, particularly concerning membranes and catalysts, is enhancing the viability and performance of these systems. The paper strongly positions PEMFCs as a superior alternative given their environmental benefits and operational efficiency. By specifically addressing the Indonesian context, it provides valuable localized perspectives on adoption pathways and existing technological progress relevant to the archipelago's unique maritime needs. Despite the compelling advantages, the review candidly acknowledges several critical hurdles impeding widespread PEMFC adoption. These include the persistently high production costs, issues related to material degradation impacting longevity, and the nascent state of hydrogen infrastructure, which poses significant logistical challenges. The authors constructively suggest that overcoming these obstacles requires concerted efforts, including enhanced cross-sector collaboration, the development of more economical materials, and strategic integration with hybrid power systems. This forward-looking approach ensures the review not only identifies problems but also charts a potential course for the sustainable and scalable implementation of fuel cell technology in the Indonesian and global maritime industry.
