Abstract

Atlantique. Féminin/Masculin. Voix. AbstractThis article aims to present an analysis of the poetical devices of metonymic displacement and metaphorical condensation in Marguerite Duras's use of the word “sea”. Through the stylistic figures of paronomasia - the association of the sea with the mother - and antonomasia - the character of the “Atlantic man” - Marguerite Duras evokes, in an indirect way, the very basis of her creative vision: the fertile link between her childhood in Indochina and the emergence of writing. Keywords: Atlantic. Mother. Feminine/Masculine. Voice - Poetic writing.

Review

The article, "Les déclinaisons rhétoriques et symboliques de la mer dans l’œuvre de Marguerite Duras," outlines a compelling and focused inquiry into a central motif in Duras's expansive oeuvre. The abstract promises an insightful analysis of how the word "mer" functions not merely as a descriptive element but as a complex nexus of meaning, shaped by processes of metonymic displacement and metaphorical condensation. This approach is highly relevant to Durasian scholarship, offering a specific lens through which to explore the profound textual strategies and underlying imaginative currents that define her unique literary voice. The study positions the "sea" as a key to unlocking deeper symbolic and rhetorical layers within Duras's work. The methodology, as delineated, appears robust and well-suited to the subject matter. By focusing on stylistic figures such as paronomasia—specifically the evocative assimilation of "mer" and "mère"—and antonomasia, exemplified by the character of "l'homme atlantique," the article intends to reveal the intricate ways Duras constructs meaning. These analytical tools are proposed to demonstrate how Duras indirectly evokes what the abstract terms the "fertile link" between her Indochinese childhood and the very emergence of her writing. This focus on the foundational connection between early life experiences and creative output, mediated through language, suggests a sophisticated and interdisciplinary engagement with Duras's biographical and literary terrain. This study appears poised to make a significant contribution to our understanding of Duras's intricate poetics and her enduring thematic concerns. By meticulously tracing the "rhetorical and symbolic declinations" of the sea, the author promises to illuminate how this motif becomes a conduit for exploring pivotal themes such as the feminine/masculine, the concept of voice, and the indelible imprint of memory on creation. The article's emphasis on indirect evocation as a hallmark of Duras's style is particularly promising, suggesting a nuanced appreciation for her elliptical narratives. This rigorous examination of Duras's linguistic artistry, connecting lexical choices to profound biographical and imaginative wellsprings, offers valuable insights into the generative power of language in her work.
