Abstract

Review

The proposed paper, "La atmósfera de un Chaco extrañado en dos obras de la literatura argentina contemporánea," promises a compelling analysis of how the Argentine Chaco region is re-imagined in contemporary fiction. Focusing on Carlos Busqued’s *Bajo este sol tremendo* (2009) and Selva Almada’s *El viento que arrasa* (2012), the study posits a central narrative strategy: the construction of space through the tension between vulnerable characters and a particularly hostile atmosphere. This approach, the abstract suggests, generates an "extrañado" (estranged or unfamiliar) gaze upon the Chaco, challenging and deconstructing traditional national imaginaries of the region. The paper frames its inquiry around crucial questions concerning the transformation of the Chaco into a literary zone, the problematization of spatiality, and the inscription of this literature within the present, grounding its arguments in diverse theoretical perspectives on the concept of region. This research appears to make a significant contribution to the study of contemporary Latin American literature, particularly in its nuanced exploration of regionality. The chosen works by Busqued and Almada are excellent examples of current literary trends that interrogate the periphery and its inhabitants with a critical lens. The emphasis on "atmósfera" and "espacialidad" as analytical tools is particularly strong, offering a fresh perspective on how environment and character interaction shape narrative meaning beyond mere backdrop. By directly questioning how contemporary Argentine narrative reshapes the Chaco, the paper positions itself to offer valuable insights into the dynamics of literary representation, cultural memory, and the evolving relationship between literature and national identity. The theoretical framework, drawing on established scholars of regionalism, further enhances the robustness of the methodology. While the abstract outlines a highly promising study, a brief reflection on the specific "matices y variantes" mentioned could further underscore the distinct contributions of each author to this shared narrative strategy. Exploring the precise mechanisms by which "imaginarios nacionales" are dismantled, beyond a general statement, would also deepen the paper's analytical precision. Nevertheless, this paper clearly offers a timely and relevant intervention into discussions surrounding regional literature, literary geography, and the political implications of aesthetic choices in contemporary Argentine fiction. It promises to be an insightful and stimulating read for scholars interested in the intersection of space, character, and cultural critique in modern narrative.
