Abstract

This study aims to examine the leadership formation process of Catholic Youth (OMK) as Word Worship officers and to identify the factors influencing their low level of participation in ministry at St. Francis of Assisi Tawang Station. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with OMK members and their instructors as the primary subjects. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed through data reduction, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the participation of Catholic Youth in church activities is generally positive, as most members are willing to serve when assigned as Word Worship officers. Their involvement includes roles such as leading the Word Worship, participating in liturgical celebrations, and contributing creatively to church life. However, their creativity and initiative remain limited, as many still rely on being appointed rather than volunteering for service. The main obstacles in the leadership formation process are the lack of professional mentors, such as catechists to accompany the youth, and internal challenges among OMK members, including low self-confidence and limited organizational skills. The study suggests that further research and pastoral attention are needed to strengthen the leadership formation and active participation of Catholic Youth in church ministries.

Review

This study offers a pertinent qualitative examination into the leadership formation process among Catholic Youth (OMK) serving as Word Worship officers within a specific Indonesian parish context. The research clearly articulates its aim to understand both the development of these youth leaders and the factors contributing to their perceived low participation. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology, drawing data from OMK members and instructors through observation, interviews, and documentation, the study provides valuable initial insights into a critical aspect of church vitality: youth engagement and leadership succession. The findings highlight a paradoxical situation where youth are generally willing to serve when appointed but exhibit limited self-initiated creativity and volunteerism, pointing to deeper systemic and individual challenges. A key strength of this research lies in its clear articulation of the problem and the use of a qualitative approach, which is well-suited to exploring the nuanced experiences and perceptions of youth involvement in religious ministries. By identifying specific obstacles such as the lack of professional mentors (catechists) and internal challenges like low self-confidence and limited organizational skills among OMK members, the study provides actionable insights for pastoral leaders. These findings move beyond superficial observations of participation rates to uncover underlying causes, offering a foundational understanding that can inform targeted interventions and resource allocation. The identification of these distinct barriers is a significant contribution, providing a roadmap for strengthening youth leadership development within the community. While the study effectively diagnoses the issues, the abstract hints at areas for deeper exploration and future development. For instance, a more detailed understanding of the *current* "kaderisasi" (cadre formation) process itself, beyond merely observing its outcomes, could provide greater context for the identified limitations. Future research could build upon these findings by exploring the efficacy of different mentorship models, developing specific training programs to enhance organizational skills and self-confidence, or conducting comparative studies across different parishes to identify best practices. Addressing the call for "further pastoral attention," subsequent work might focus on designing and evaluating concrete interventions aimed at fostering proactive volunteerism and nurturing innate creativity, thereby ensuring a more robust and sustainable youth leadership pipeline.
