Abstract

Review

This study, "Pengaruh tingkat pengetahuan terhadap tindakan swamedikasi batuk di Dusun Sidamukti, Kecamatan Langkaplancar," investigates a critically important public health topic in Indonesia: the influence of knowledge on self-medication practices for cough. Given the high prevalence of self-medication in the country, understanding the factors that drive rational drug use is essential. The authors clearly articulate their objective to examine this relationship within a specific community, utilizing a descriptive analytic cross-sectional design. This approach, employing a validated and reliable questionnaire, provides a foundational understanding of the community's self-medication patterns and their underlying cognitive influences. The methodology is straightforward and appropriate for the study's aim, effectively employing Chi-square analysis to determine the association between knowledge levels and self-medication actions. The results are compelling and statistically significant, revealing that a substantial majority of respondents possessed good knowledge (84.6%), which correlated strongly with appropriate self-medication practices (92.3%). The p-value of 0.000 (<0.05) robustly supports the conclusion that there is a significant positive influence of knowledge on the appropriateness of self-medication for cough. This finding underscores the direct and measurable impact of public health education on individual health behaviors, highlighting the paper's strength in providing clear empirical evidence for this link. While the study offers valuable insights, the cross-sectional design inherently limits the ability to infer causality; it establishes correlation rather than direct causation. Furthermore, the generalizability of findings from a single dusun (hamlet) to a broader, more diverse population may be limited. Future research could benefit from exploring other determinants of self-medication, employing longitudinal designs to track changes over time, or conducting intervention studies to directly evaluate the impact of educational programs. Nevertheless, the study's conclusion, emphasizing the critical need for pharmaceutical education to promote rational self-medication, is well-justified by its findings and provides a clear, actionable recommendation for public health practitioners and policymakers. The paper makes a solid contribution to the literature on community health and medication literacy.
