Introduction

Abstract

Review

This study, "Kadar hormon estradiol dan testosteron ikan Ringau (Datnioides microlepis) serta sifat monomorfisme," addresses a pertinent issue in the biology of *Datnioides microlepis*: the challenge of sex determination due to its monomorphic nature. The research aims to explore the hormonal profiles of estradiol and testosterone in relation to the sex of these tigerfish, thereby seeking to unravel the physiological underpinnings of this characteristic. Understanding the sex-related hormone levels in monomorphic species is crucial for aquaculture practices, conservation efforts, and advancing our general knowledge of reproductive endocrinology in fish, making this a relevant and timely investigation. The methodology involved a very small sample size of six fish, consisting of two males, two females, and two individuals of undetermined sex, all tagged with implanted chips for identification. Estradiol-17β and testosterone levels in blood were quantified using commercial ELISA kits. The primary findings indicate that both male and female fish possess detectable levels of both hormones, but with "irregular patterns." A notable observation was a reported decrease in testosterone levels following estradiol stimulation. While the analytical approach using ELISA is standard, the extremely limited sample size is a significant methodological weakness that severely restricts the statistical power and generalizability of the findings, preventing robust conclusions about the species' hormonal physiology. Despite the limitations posed by the small sample size, the study contributes initial data suggesting complex hormonal regulation in *D. microlepis*. The presence of both estradiol and testosterone in both sexes, coupled with irregular patterns, supports the notion of monomorphism but also hints at unique endocrine dynamics possibly different from sexually dimorphic species. The reported decrease in testosterone upon estradiol stimulation is an interesting observation that warrants further, more controlled investigation into feedback mechanisms. To significantly advance this field, future research should incorporate a substantially larger number of individuals across different maturity stages, provide clearer definitions of the observed "irregular patterns," and elaborate on the conditions and context of the estradiol stimulation experiment to offer a more comprehensive understanding of hormonal influences on sex and monomorphism in this intriguing species.
