Hypertension is a condition when systolic blood pressure reaches or exceeds 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure reaches or exceeds 90 mmHg when measured at a health care facility. In 2021, there were 69,247 cases of hypertension in Salatiga City, but only 20,310 cases received health services. This community engagement aims to provide health promotion to the community related to hypertension and how to prevent hypertension with Mesem juice. Mesem juice is made of four ingredients: cucumber, celery, lemon and honey. Through questionnaires distributed to the participants, we found that 39 out of 40 (97.5%) respondents agreed that this hypertension health promotion activity and Mesem juice making demonstration increased their knowledge related to hypertension and increased their interest in preventing hypertension by making Mesem juice at home. With this health promotion, the community will be able to prevent hypertension in an easy way and can be started from their own family.
This community engagement report introduces "Jus Mesem" (cucumber, celery, lemon, and honey) as a natural approach to hypertension prevention, addressing a significant public health issue in Salatiga City where a large proportion of hypertension cases remain unserved. The study's primary objective was to deliver health promotion and demonstrate the preparation of Mesem juice to foster community understanding and interest in preventing hypertension. This initiative highlights a commendable effort to bridge the gap between healthcare services and community awareness, particularly for a chronic condition like hypertension that benefits greatly from preventive lifestyle modifications. The findings indicate a highly positive reception to the intervention, with 97.5% of 40 participants agreeing that the health promotion and juice-making demonstration enhanced their knowledge of hypertension and increased their motivation to adopt Mesem juice for prevention at home. This suggests the educational component was effective in raising awareness and creating a perceived interest in behavioral change. The simplicity and accessibility of the Mesem juice ingredients present a practical and cost-effective strategy for individuals to potentially integrate into their daily routines, aligning with the goal of easy, family-level prevention. While the reported enthusiasm and increased knowledge are encouraging, the study's design as a community engagement activity has inherent limitations that preclude strong scientific claims about the efficacy of Mesem juice. The reliance on self-reported interest and knowledge, without objective measures of actual behavioral change (e.g., consistent juice consumption) or physiological outcomes (e.g., blood pressure reduction), means the long-term impact on hypertension prevention remains speculative. Future research would benefit from a more rigorous experimental design, including a larger sample size, a control group, objective outcome measures, and a longer follow-up period, to substantiate the preventative potential of Jus Mesem and validate its role in clinical practice.
