Introduction

Jenis tumbuhan pakan drop in badak sumatera (dicerorhinos sumatrensis) di sumatran rhino sanctuary (srs), taman nasional way kambas. Temukan jenis tumbuhan pakan drop-in Badak Sumatera (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) di SRS Way Kambas.

Abstract

Review

This paper, titled "JENIS TUMBUHAN PAKAN DROP IN BADAK SUMATERA (Dicerorhinos sumatrensis) DI SUMATRAN RHINO SANCTUARY (SRS), TAMAN NASIONAL WAY KAMBAS," addresses a crucial aspect of *ex situ* conservation for the critically endangered Sumatran rhinoceros. The primary objective is to identify and document the types of "drop-in" feed plant species provided to rhinos within the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) at Way Kambas National Park. This research is highly relevant, aiming to provide fundamental data that can facilitate more effective management strategies, which are essential for the species' long-term survival and breeding success. The study was conducted over a specific period from May to June 2023, utilizing a qualitative analytical approach to gather its findings. The findings indicate a commendable diversity in the daily diet offered to the Sumatran rhinos at SRS. The abstract notes that the daily provision typically comprises 8-10 different species, consisting of both leaves and fruits. This varied feeding regimen is explicitly stated to meet the rhinos' vitamin requirements and provide dietary variation, which is essential for maintaining animal health and welfare in a controlled environment. Furthermore, the study successfully identifies the most dominant plant families contributing to this "drop-in" feed, with Moraceae being the most prevalent (four identified species), followed by Convolvulaceae and Fabaceae (each contributing two species). This highlights specific botanical groups regularly utilized in the rhinos' diet. This study provides valuable baseline information on the dietary components for Sumatran rhinos in a sanctuary setting, which is crucial for captive breeding and potential reintroduction efforts. The focus on identifying specific plant species and dominant families is a strong starting point for understanding their nutritional ecology. To further enhance the impact of these findings, future research could move beyond qualitative enumeration. It would be highly beneficial to quantify consumption rates for each species, conduct nutritional analyses of the dominant plant types, and assess rhino preferences through behavioral observations. Such additions would provide a more comprehensive understanding of the nutritional intake and its direct impact on rhino health and reproductive success, thereby further strengthening conservation management strategies.
