Jabar hattrick, team west java’s victory in the xxi national sports week: a framing analysis. Uncover the media framing of West Java's 'Hattrick' victory at PON XXI/2024. This study applies Entman's framing analysis to Detik.com & Kompas.com news.
Jawa Barat (West Java/Jabar) achieved a "Hattrick" when the West Java team was announced as the overall champion at the XXI National Sports Week (PON) in Aceh and North Sumatra. The XXI National Sports Week in 2024 also achieved a "hat-trick" for West Java, following the West Java team's overall championship at the previous events, namely the XIX National Sports Week in 2016 (West Java) and the XX National Sports Week in 2020 (Papua). XXI National Sports Week also made a "hat-trick" for West Java, after the West Java team also became the overall champion at the previous National Sports Week, namely at XIX National Sports Week (West Java) and XX National Sports Week (Papua). This study aims to determine the framing of the news of the victory of the West Java team at the PON XXI/2024. The method used in this research is Robert N. Entman's framing analysis. The unit of analysis used in this research is the news on online media, which includes Detik.com and Kompas.com after the 2024 National Sports Week after September 20, 2024. Based on the search results, Kompas.com reported more about the victory of the West Java team coming from two sides, administrators and athletes. While on Detik.com, the victory of the West Java team was more focused on the struggle from the athlete's side. Framing related to the victory of the West Java team at the 2024 National Sports Week is supported by the existence of sports management, an optimistic attitude, consistency, not complacency, especially for athletes.
This paper presents a timely and engaging study focused on the media framing of West Java's unprecedented "hat-trick" victory at the XXI National Sports Week (PON) in 2024. The context of West Java securing its third consecutive overall championship provides a compelling narrative hook, highlighting a significant achievement in Indonesian sports. The stated aim to determine how this victory was framed in online news media is clear and relevant, promising insights into how regional athletic success is constructed and conveyed to the public. The theoretical foundation in Robert N. Entman's well-established framing analysis is a strong methodological choice, suggesting a systematic approach to deconstructing media messages. The methodology outlines a focus on news articles from two prominent Indonesian online media outlets, Detik.com and Kompas.com, published after September 20, 2024. The abstract provides preliminary findings indicating distinct framing approaches: Kompas.com reportedly encompassed perspectives from both administrators and athletes, while Detik.com concentrated more exclusively on the athletes' struggles. Furthermore, the abstract identifies key supporting frames related to sports management, optimism, consistency, and a proactive attitude against complacency. These initial insights suggest that the study will offer a nuanced comparison of how different media interpret and present the same event, potentially revealing underlying editorial stances or public interest focuses. Overall, the paper outlines a promising investigation into media representation of sports success and regional pride. The application of Entman's framework to a specific, high-profile event like the PON "hat-trick" has the potential to contribute significantly to our understanding of media discourse in Indonesia. For the full paper, it would be beneficial to see a detailed application of Entman's four elements (problem definition, causal attribution, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation) in distinguishing the framing between the media outlets. Additionally, elaborating on the specific implications of these different framings for public perception, regional identity, and sports policy would further enhance the study's impact and scholarly contribution.
