Abstract

Review

This study introduces a novel "Relógio do Enfrentamento" (Coping Clock) intervention, a brief, structured, and playful psychological approach designed to enhance coping mechanisms and reduce stress in hospitalized children aged 7-12 years. By assigning sixty participants and their caregivers into two groups, the researchers utilized established instruments—the Child Stress Scale and a Hospitalization Coping Strategies Assessment Scale—to measure psychological outcomes. The intervention group demonstrated a significant reduction in stress symptoms and an increased use of adaptive behaviors within 48 hours post-intervention, signaling the immediate efficacy and practical viability of the proposed method in a pediatric healthcare setting. A notable strength of this research lies in its clear focus on developing a targeted, age-appropriate, and structured intervention for a vulnerable population. The "Relógio do Enfrentamento" appears to be a well-defined and potentially replicable tool, offering a practical solution to a prevalent issue in pediatric hospitalization. The dual assessment of both stress levels and coping strategies provides a comprehensive picture of the intervention's impact on children's psychological well-being. Furthermore, the swift positive changes observed within a short timeframe underscore the potential for this brief intervention to be effectively integrated into busy clinical routines, addressing the immediate psychological needs of hospitalized children. While the preliminary results are encouraging, the abstract presents several areas that warrant further clarification and development. A primary limitation is the lack of detailed information regarding the control group (G1), including whether they received standard care or no intervention, which is crucial for robust comparisons. The short 48-hour follow-up period also limits the generalizability of the findings concerning the long-term sustainability of the intervention's benefits. Future research would significantly benefit from extending the follow-up duration to assess the maintenance of adaptive coping and stress reduction throughout hospitalization and post-discharge. Additionally, providing more specifics on the randomization process and the content of the "Protocolo de Identificação" for caregivers would enhance the methodological transparency and overall scientific rigor of this otherwise promising study.
