Abstract

ENGLISH ABSTRACT How Can Participation in a Short-term Student Exchange Program Contribute to the Professional Socialization of Early Childhood Education Students? The study examines how Norwegian students’ expressions in their texts, submitted after a study stay in Russia, show opportunities for exploring authoritative discourses within Norwegian kindergarten pedagogy. A dialogic thematic analysis shows that the study in Russia allowed the Norwegian students to explore four authoritative discourses: children’s right to participation, the kindergarten’s relationship with the school, didactic planning, and the discourse on equality. The results are discussed in light of Bakhtin’s framework of ideological becoming. The findings indicate that the discourses are explored by being questioned, being related to the Russian context, and becoming the students’ inner persuasive discourses. The study recommends selecting a limited professional focus for students’ study stays abroad in the future, encouraging students to assess what they have observed, and experienced and to make their assessments available to teachers and fellow students.

Review

This article presents a timely and insightful exploration into the often-overlooked area of how international student exchange programs contribute to professional socialization in early childhood education. The study effectively leverages student-generated texts from a short-term stay in Russia to illuminate how exposure to an alternative educational context can foster a critical engagement with national pedagogical discourses. By focusing on the "ideological becoming" of students, the paper offers a nuanced understanding of how such experiences can facilitate deeper professional learning beyond mere cultural exposure, making a valuable contribution to both ECE pedagogy and international education research. A significant strength of this work lies in its methodological approach, particularly the use of thematic analysis to identify specific authoritative discourses within Norwegian ECE pedagogy that were explored by students. The identification of discourses such as "children's right to participation" and "didactic planning" provides concrete examples of the pedagogical concepts at play. The application of Bakhtin's concept of ideological becoming is particularly powerful, demonstrating how students move from questioning established ideas to internalizing them as their own "persuasive discourses." This theoretical framing adeptly captures the transformative potential of comparative professional experiences. Furthermore, the practical recommendations for structuring future exchange programs and student assignments are well-founded and highly pertinent for educational institutions seeking to maximize the professional impact of such initiatives. While the study offers compelling insights, the nature of the "short-term" exchange and the specific Russian context might limit the immediate generalizability of some findings to other exchange durations or host countries. Future research could explore if similar processes of "ideological becoming" occur across different durations of exchange or in other host country contexts, potentially enriching the understanding of contextual factors. It would also be interesting to delve deeper into the *nature* of the student texts – what specific textual features or rhetorical moves signal this questioning and subsequent internalization. Nevertheless, this paper provides a robust foundation for understanding the intricate link between international mobility and professional identity formation, prompting important reflections on how to design and evaluate such formative experiences effectively.
