Review

This study adeptly investigates the critical link between lifestyle factors, specifically eating patterns and coffee consumption, and the prevalence of gastritis among adolescents at MAN 1 Tangerang. Given the high incidence of gastritis in Indonesia, particularly among youth, this research addresses a significant public health concern. The authors effectively highlight how modern lifestyles can contribute to health issues, setting a strong rationale for their inquiry. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional approach with total sampling from a defined adolescent population, the study identified that a substantial proportion of respondents exhibited poor eating habits (61.3%) and poor coffee consumption habits (63.7%). Crucially, the statistical analysis, employing the Chi-Square test, revealed a significant association between both poor eating patterns and coffee consumption with the occurrence of gastritis, validating the study's central hypotheses. While the study's objective and findings are clear, some methodological aspects could be further elaborated for enhanced rigor. The cross-sectional design, by its nature, allows for the identification of associations but cannot definitively establish causality. Future research utilizing longitudinal designs would be beneficial to track the development of gastritis in relation to these lifestyle factors over time. Additionally, the terms "poor eating patterns" and "poor coffee consumption" are broadly defined in the abstract; greater detail on the specific criteria used for these classifications (e.g., frequency of meals, type of food, quantity of coffee, timing of consumption) would strengthen the internal validity and replicability of the findings. The sample size of 80 participants, while representing total sampling for this specific school, may limit the generalizability of these findings to a broader adolescent population in Tangerang or Indonesia. Despite these considerations, the study provides valuable insights into modifiable risk factors for gastritis among adolescents. The significant associations found underscore the urgent need for health education and intervention programs targeting young individuals regarding balanced nutrition and judicious coffee intake. These findings can inform school health initiatives and public health campaigns aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles in adolescent populations to mitigate the burden of gastritis. Future research could expand upon this foundation by exploring mediating factors, incorporating larger and more diverse samples, and potentially integrating qualitative methods to gain a deeper understanding of the behavioral contexts influencing adolescents' eating and coffee consumption habits.
