Abstract

Work accidents in the construction sector are often triggered by workers' risky behavior in using personal protective equipment (PPE). This research aims to determine the relationship between knowledge and supervision and the behavior of using PPE in construction workers. The research method uses a quantitative approach with a cross sectional design. The number of respondents was 50 workers selected through total sampling. Data was collected using questionnaires and observations, then analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The research results showed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge and PPE use behavior (p < 0.05) and between supervision and PPE use behavior (p < 0.05). Workers with low knowledge tend to be undisciplined in the use of PPE. Consistent supervision contributes to increased worker discipline. This research confirms that knowledge and supervision influence the behavior of using PPE. Companies need to improve their PPE provision and storage mechanisms, increase the effectiveness of supervision, develop risk-based work procedures according to the type of work, involve senior workers, and enforce administrative sanctions to curb risky behavior and prevent workplace accidents.

Review

This study investigates the crucial factors of supervision and knowledge in influencing personal protective equipment (PPE) usage behavior among construction workers at a specific industrial project site. The paper effectively addresses a pertinent issue within the high-risk construction sector, where accidents are frequently linked to non-compliance with safety protocols. Utilizing a quantitative cross-sectional design with a focused sample of 50 workers, the research clearly establishes significant relationships between both worker knowledge and the effectiveness of supervision with disciplined PPE use. The findings, indicating that low knowledge correlates with undisciplined behavior and consistent supervision enhances compliance, provide valuable empirical support for well-understood safety principles and offer a solid foundation for practical interventions. While the research provides clear and actionable findings, a primary point of concern arises from the title, "Hubungan Pengawasan & Pengetahuan terhadap Perilaku Penggunaan Alat Pelindung Diri PT. Kajima Indonesia PCG Central Java Industrial Project Tahun 2025" (Relationship of Supervision & Knowledge on PPE Usage Behavior at PT. Kajima Indonesia PCG Central Java Industrial Project Year 2025). The inclusion of "Tahun 2025" (Year 2025) in the title suggests a future-oriented study or a specific project timeline, yet the abstract clearly describes *completed* research with "results showed" (menunjukkan). This temporal inconsistency requires clarification; it needs to be made explicit whether the study is a baseline for future interventions, a projection, or if the "2025" refers to the project's target completion year rather than the research period. Additionally, while the use of total sampling for 50 respondents is noted, a brief discussion on how representative this sample is of the larger workforce at PT. Kajima Indonesia, or similar projects, could strengthen the generalizability of the findings beyond this specific context. Despite these minor points for clarification, the study makes a valuable contribution to occupational health and safety literature, particularly within the Indonesian construction industry context. The practical recommendations, ranging from improving PPE provision and storage to enhancing supervision effectiveness, developing risk-based procedures, and enforcing administrative sanctions, are highly relevant and directly actionable for PT. Kajima Indonesia and potentially for other construction firms facing similar challenges. The paper effectively reinforces the critical role of both cognitive understanding and organizational oversight in fostering a safer work environment, thereby offering a robust framework for curbing risky behavior and preventing workplace accidents.
