Hooked on learning: evidence based learning principles through an incentive-based variable ratio schedule. Enhance medical student learning with an innovative incentive-based system. It uses variable ratio schedules, active recall, and spaced repetition to boost success and reduce stress effectively.
Medical students are often faced with multiple challenges, one of which is the substantial amount of knowledge they are required to learn. While effective learning strategies have been thoroughly researched, stress amongst medical students remains very high, suggesting that novel ways of implementing such strategies are required. Our aim is to promote a novel supplementary approach to medical education involving a variable ratio (VR) incentive-based system of active recall (AR) and spaced repetition (SR). This system rewards the small progressions made throughout the semester and complements formal structured examinations. Through this optional summative activity, students will receive a variable immediate grade reward on a daily basis, that will be incorporated into their final semester marking scheme. This article discusses methods to implement this initiative, as well as its benefits and limitations. While further work is required to assess the efficacy of this strategy, the presented initiative provides a starting point to facilitate success in medical school.
