Abstract

Literature is born from the human desire to express their existence, which is closely related to the relationship between individuals and with the reality of life. A literary work contains specific intentions and purposes set by the author. Therefore, all aspects of a literary work originate from the author, who plays a crucial role in generating creative ideas that are expressed through their writings. In line with technological advancements, literature has also undergone transformation. One of the indicators of this progress is the emergence of intersemiotic transfer or adaptation, namely the process of changing the medium through which a literary work is presented, such as from text to audiovisual or film. In this context, the researcher examines the adaptation process from novel to film as the object of study. The object of this research is the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which was later adapted into a film by director Baz Luhrmann, released in 2013 under the same title. The novel portrays the life of the American upper class during the 1920s, an era often referred to as the Roaring Twenties. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. Qualitative research aims to describe and analyze social phenomena and activities found in the research object. The data were collected through reading, observing, and note-taking techniques, involving both the novel and the film script. In total, the researcher collected 12 data points from the analysis of the novel and its film adaptation.

Review

This paper proposes an examination of the "ekranisasi," or screen adaptation, of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel *The Great Gatsby* into Baz Luhrmann's 2013 film. The chosen topic is highly relevant to adaptation studies, a dynamic field that explores the complex relationship between literary texts and their cinematic interpretations. The abstract effectively introduces the broader context of literature's evolution with technological advancements, setting the stage for an investigation into intersemiotic transfer. The selection of *The Great Gatsby*, a seminal work depicting the American Roaring Twenties, and Luhrmann's distinctive film, provides rich material for analysis, promising insights into how a well-known narrative and its themes are translated across mediums. The methodology outlined is a descriptive qualitative approach, aiming to analyze social phenomena within the research object. Data collection relies on standard techniques for such studies: reading the novel, observing the film, and taking notes, including from the film script. While descriptive qualitative is an appropriate overarching method, the abstract's mention of collecting "12 data points" from the analysis raises some concerns regarding the potential depth and scope of the study. For a comprehensive analysis of an entire novel and its feature film adaptation, 12 data points appears to be a very limited number, suggesting the need for more specific clarification on what these points represent and how they will enable a thorough comparison. While the premise is strong, the abstract could benefit from a more explicit articulation of the theoretical framework guiding the analysis. Beyond simply stating "intersemiotic transfer," identifying specific theories or models from adaptation studies (e.g., those by Linda Hutcheon, Robert Stam, or Brian McFarlane) would significantly strengthen the paper's academic rigor and provide a clear lens through which the adaptation process will be examined. Additionally, clarifying the specific analytical focus – for instance, whether the study will prioritize narrative changes, character transformations, thematic shifts, or the visual and auditory language of the film – would further enhance the precision of the research objective and the potential contributions of this study to the field.
