This study investigates the potential of purple sweet potato leaf decoction to combat anemia in second-trimester pregnant women, a significant public health concern with dire consequences for both mother and child. The authors' initiative to explore an accessible and traditional remedy for improving hemoglobin levels is highly commendable. The research presents a compelling initial finding, indicating a statistically significant increase in hemoglobin levels following a 7-day intervention, thus contributing valuable preliminary data to the field of maternal nutrition and alternative therapies. Methodologically, the study utilized a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, which, while appropriate for initial exploration, inherently limits the ability to definitively attribute the observed hemoglobin increase solely to the intervention. The absence of a control group means that the influence of other confounding factors or natural physiological variations cannot be entirely ruled out. Furthermore, the relatively small sample size of 22 respondents and the short intervention duration of 7 days warrant caution in generalizing these findings. While the use of Hb test Easy Touch offers a practical measurement solution in a community setting, its precision compared to gold-standard laboratory methods might be considered a minor limitation for clinical exactitude. Despite these design considerations, the study provides promising evidence that consuming purple sweet potato leaf decoction can significantly elevate hemoglobin levels in pregnant women with mild anemia. This outcome suggests a potential, cost-effective, and culturally appropriate adjunctive therapy for anemia management, particularly in regions where access to conventional treatments may be limited. For future research, it is strongly recommended to adopt a more robust study design, such as a randomized controlled trial with a larger sample size and a longer intervention period, to establish stronger causality and assess long-term efficacy. Further investigations into the optimal dosage, specific bioactive compounds, and a comparative analysis with standard iron supplementation would also greatly enhance the scientific understanding and practical application of this promising intervention.
