Abstract

Background: The government has developed strategies and policies in the form of health improvement programs to reduce the Maternal Mortality Rate, including improving Antenatal Care. The family has a significant role in determining the health status of the mother. The support provided by the family creates a sense of peace and happiness within, so that pregnant women ultimately find it easier to adjust to their pregnancy. Objective: To find out the correlations between family support and ANC visits in the working area of Sungai Turak Health Center, Hulu Sungai Utara Regency. Methode: This type of research with correlational study design with cross sectional approach. Population of 80 pregnant women and sample of 45 respondents at Sungai Turak Health Center in April 2025, taken by purposive sampling technique. Data collection using questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Chi-Square test. Result: Family support is mostly supportive, namely 34 people (75,6%). ANC check-up visits are mostly complete, namely 40 people (88.9%). Conclusion: There was a correlations between family support and ANC visits in the working area of Sungai Turak Health Center, Hulu Sungai Utara Regency with a p value (0.010<0.05). Midwives are advised to motivate pregnant women to have regular ANC check-ups, blood pressure checks, improve the quality of ANC health services, and intensify counseling and information and education counseling for high-risk pregnancies.

Review

This paper addresses a crucial public health issue: the significant role of family support in promoting Antenatal Care (ANC) visits, a vital strategy to reduce maternal mortality. The objective to investigate the correlation between family support and ANC attendance in the Sungai Turak Health Center's working area is clearly stated and relevant. The study's findings are compelling, indicating a high prevalence of both supportive families and complete ANC visits within the sampled population, and confirming a statistically significant correlation between these two variables. This reinforces the widely acknowledged importance of social support structures in improving maternal health outcomes. While the chosen correlational study design with a cross-sectional approach is appropriate for identifying associations, the research has several methodological limitations. The relatively small sample size of 45 pregnant women, coupled with the use of a purposive sampling technique, significantly restricts the generalizability of the findings to a broader population and introduces potential selection bias. Furthermore, reliance on questionnaires for data collection may be susceptible to social desirability bias, potentially leading to an overestimation of reported family support or ANC completion rates. The abstract also provides only a p-value for the correlation, without detailing the specific strength or direction of the relationship, which would offer a more robust understanding of the findings. Despite these limitations, this study offers valuable preliminary insights into the local determinants of ANC utilization, particularly highlighting the positive influence of family support in the specified region. The recommendations for midwives to motivate regular ANC, improve service quality, and intensify counseling are pertinent and actionable. For future research, it would be highly beneficial to employ a larger, more representative sample, potentially utilizing a longitudinal design to establish causality. Additionally, incorporating qualitative methods could provide a deeper, nuanced understanding of how family support is manifested and experienced, thereby informing more culturally sensitive and effective interventions to improve maternal health outcomes.
