Abstract

The mental health of university students is a crucial aspect that contributes to their academic success and psychological well-being. However, many students experience academic, social, and emotional pressures that may trigger mental health disorders such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Unfortunately, limited access to counseling services and the negative stigma surrounding mental health discourage many students from seeking help. Therefore, innovative solutions are needed to support student mental health in a more accessible and effective manner. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a mental health counseling e-book for university students. The research employs the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) development model, involving 417 students from the State Islamic University of North Sumatra. Data collection was conducted using a Likert-scale questionnaire to measure students' mental health before and after the e-book intervention. The findings indicate that the developed e-book meets the content and design feasibility standards, with percentages of 68.73% and 88.52%, respectively, and was deemed highly suitable by experts. The Wilcoxon statistical test revealed a significant improvement in students' mental health levels following the use of the e-book, with an Asymp. Sig value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). Thus, the e-book has proven to be an effective tool in helping students manage their mental health. This study recommends the utilization of e-books as a supplementary counseling medium in higher education institutions to enhance students' psychological well-being.

Review

The study "Developing a Mental Health Counseling E-book to Improve Student Mental Health" addresses a critically important and timely issue: the deteriorating mental health of university students. The abstract effectively highlights the significant pressures students face and the prevalent barriers to traditional counseling services, such as limited access and societal stigma. By proposing an innovative e-book solution, the research positions itself as a practical and accessible approach to enhance student psychological well-being, directly tackling the identified challenges with a modern, scalable intervention. Employing a systematic ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model, the study involved a substantial sample of 417 students from the State Islamic University of North Sumatra, lending considerable weight to its findings. The methodology included a pre-post intervention design utilizing a Likert-scale questionnaire to measure mental health changes. The results are compelling: the e-book demonstrated strong feasibility in both content (68.73%) and design (88.52%) and received high suitability ratings from experts. Crucially, the Wilcoxon statistical test confirmed a significant improvement in students' mental health levels after engaging with the e-book (Asymp. Sig value of 0.000, p < 0.05), clearly establishing its effectiveness as a mental health management tool. This research makes a valuable contribution to the field of student support services by validating an accessible and potentially stigma-reducing intervention. The robust methodology and clear statistical evidence of effectiveness are significant strengths. The findings strongly support the recommendation for higher education institutions to integrate such e-books as supplementary counseling mediums. Future research could further explore the specific components of the e-book that contributed most to its efficacy, investigate long-term outcomes, and assess its generalizability across diverse student populations and educational settings, thereby maximizing its potential to improve global student mental health.
