Abstract

[ultima revisione Gennaio 2018]

Review

The proposed research outlined in this abstract offers a compelling comparative study of urban and functional development in two key Republican-era provincial capitals, Carales (Cagliari) and Tarraco (Tarragona), in the Western Mediterranean. Drawing on both literary and archaeological evidence, the authors aim to identify common patterns in how early Roman settlements interacted with pre-existing coastal urban centers, specifically focusing on a "juxtaposition" dynamic. This approach promises to shed light on the initial stages of Romanization and urban planning in strategically important regional hubs during the Republic. The strength of this work lies in its comparative methodology, which is crucial for understanding broader trends in Roman provincial administration and urbanism. By examining Carales and Tarraco in parallel, the research has the potential to move beyond site-specific analyses to reveal overarching strategies or emergent patterns in the establishment of Roman authority and infrastructure. The explicit hypothesis regarding the "juxtaposition" of Roman and indigenous settlements provides a clear analytical framework, and the suggestion that this dynamic could also be observed in Utica further enhances the potential for a robust, multi-regional synthesis of Republican urban development. This comparative lens could yield significant insights into the nature of Roman expansion and its transformative impact on the built environment. As "preliminary observations" outlining "possible lines of research," this abstract lays a strong foundation for an impactful study. To fully realize its potential, the subsequent full paper would need to thoroughly detail the specific literary and archaeological documentation employed, provide concrete examples of the proposed "juxtaposition" dynamic at each site, and articulate the analytical framework for its comparative evaluation. Given the abstract's last revision date of January 2018, it would be important for the finalized work to reflect any subsequent research or methodological advancements in the field. A deeper exploration of the *functional* correspondences, beyond mere urbanistic layout, would further enrich the analysis, demonstrating how these physical arrangements reflected administrative, economic, or social adaptations in the early Republican period.
