Abstract

[ultima revisione Gennaio 2018]

Review

The paper "Cave megalitiche della Sardegna" presents a focused and important study into the prehistoric exploitation of lithic geo-resources for megalithic constructions on the island of Sardinia. The authors clearly articulate their objective: to reconstruct the operational chain of megalith extraction, driven by the recognized significance of these materials in ancient times. By concentrating on four specific island contexts, the research promises a detailed and geographically grounded understanding of resource procurement and ancient engineering practices during Sardinian Prehistory. A key strength of this work, as outlined in the abstract, is its methodological approach. The study relies on a meticulous analysis of both quarry traces and the resulting artifacts, allowing for a comprehensive reconstruction of the entire "operational chain." This involves defining distinct phases, from the initial search and acquisition of raw materials to the ultimate creation of the "lito-costruito" (lithic construction). This detailed, process-oriented investigation is particularly valuable, offering insights not just into the end products of prehistoric labor but into the technological knowledge, logistical organization, and resource management strategies employed by ancient communities. While the abstract provides a strong outline of the study's achievements, including the formulation of hypotheses concerning the spatial and temporal distribution of the quarried materials, the full paper would likely benefit from further elaboration on the evidence supporting these distribution patterns. Deeper insights into the specific geological characteristics of the materials, the inferred quarrying tools, and the social structures potentially facilitating such large-scale endeavors would undoubtedly enrich the discussion. Overall, this research appears to make a substantial contribution to our understanding of prehistoric archaeology and archaeometry, offering a crucial perspective on the practicalities behind Sardinia's distinctive megalithic heritage.
