Bribery in the perspective of hadith: a study of commentary and contextualization in contemporary cases. Explore Islamic teachings on bribery (risywah) through Hadith, analyzing its prohibition, contemporary forms like fraud & vote-buying, and ethical guidelines for justice & integrity.
Bribery (risywah) is a prohibited act in Islam as it disrupts justice and fosters social inequality. In hadith studies, bribery is strongly condemned due to its potential to corrupt morality and societal order. This study examines hadiths related to bribery, identifies its prohibited forms, and analyzes their relevance in modern contexts. This research contributes to the academic discussion by providing a comprehensive hadith-based perspective on bribery and its implications in contemporary society. Using a library research approach with a thematic hadith commentary and contextualization model, this study systematically examines classical and modern scholarly interpretations of bribery. However, scholars allow bribery under specific conditions, such as in emergencies, when it does not harm others, or when avoiding greater injustice. Additionally, hadith discussions differentiate bribery from permissible gifts, emphasizing that judges should not accept gifts while in office, as their salary suffices. Moreover, bribery remains a contemporary issue, appearing in forms such as extortion, civil servant recruitment fraud, judicial gratuities, and vote-buying in elections. In conclusion, Islamic teachings on bribery remain highly relevant, as they establish ethical guidelines to prevent corruption. The study highlights the necessity of upholding justice and integrity in governance and public affairs.
The paper, "Bribery In The Perspective Of Hadith: A Study Of Commentary And Contextualization In Contemporary Cases," addresses a highly pertinent and enduring issue: the prohibition and nuanced understanding of bribery (risywah) within Islamic tradition. Utilizing a rigorous library research approach, the study aims to systematically examine hadiths related to bribery, delineate its prohibited forms, and critically analyze their contemporary relevance. This methodological choice, involving thematic hadith commentary and contextualization, positions the research to provide a comprehensive hadith-based perspective that is both deeply rooted in Islamic scholarship and acutely aware of modern societal challenges. The abstract clearly indicates the study's findings regarding the unequivocal condemnation of bribery in Islam, emphasizing its detrimental impact on justice, social equality, and moral integrity. A particularly insightful aspect highlighted is the scholarly recognition of specific conditions under which what might appear as bribery could be permissible, such as in emergencies or to avert greater injustice, provided no harm is inflicted upon others. Furthermore, the research judiciously distinguishes between prohibited bribery and permissible gifts, especially stressing the impermissibility of judges accepting gifts. The paper then effectively bridges classical interpretations with contemporary manifestations, identifying forms like extortion, recruitment fraud, judicial gratuities, and vote-buying, thereby underscoring the enduring relevance of Islamic ethical guidelines. In conclusion, this study offers a valuable contribution to both Islamic jurisprudence and the broader discourse on ethics and governance. By meticulously examining classical and modern scholarly interpretations through the lens of hadith studies, it powerfully demonstrates the continued applicability of Islamic teachings in establishing robust ethical frameworks to combat corruption. The research effectively reinforces the critical necessity of upholding justice and integrity across all facets of governance and public affairs. This work is highly relevant for policymakers, religious scholars, and the general public seeking to understand and combat bribery from a deeply informed Islamic ethical standpoint.
