Abstract

The use of social media today is not only among adults, in fact many children under 17 years old already have social media. Unfortunately, social media has many negative effects on children's lifestyles, if the child does not receive regular parenting from their parents regarding the use of social media. The aim of this research is to find out how the use of gadgets affects the physical fitness level of grade 8 male students at SMPN 1 Sukodono. The research method used is descriptive quantitative to analyze data by describing or illustrating the data. From the use of gadgets by 40 students, the results were 13% in the low category, 30% in the medium category, 38% in the high category, and 20% in the very high category. Meanwhile, the physical fitness results for grade 8 male students at SMPN 1 Sukodono were in the medium category with a score of 37,3. The results of the research on the intensity of gadget use of grade 8 male students at SMPN 1 Sukodono are in the high category with a percentage value of 38% and conversely, the physical fitness level of grade 8 male students at SMPN 1 Sukodono is dominant in the medium category with a VO²Max of 37.3.

Review

This paper investigates a highly relevant and timely topic: the relationship between gadget use and physical fitness among adolescent male students in Indonesia. The stated aim to understand "how the use of gadgets affects the physical fitness level" of grade 8 male students at SMPN 1 Sukodono is well-defined and addresses a growing concern regarding public health and youth lifestyle in the digital age. The chosen descriptive quantitative method provides a foundational approach to characterize the current situation, offering insights into the prevalence of gadget use and the general physical fitness status of the target population. While the abstract clearly outlines the research objective and the descriptive quantitative methodology, there are some areas that would benefit from further elaboration in a full manuscript. The abstract presents separate findings for gadget use (categorized into low, medium, high, very high percentages) and physical fitness (a single VO2Max score indicating a medium category). However, to fully address the stated aim of understanding "how the use of gadgets *affects*" physical fitness, the current abstract lacks details on how "gadget use" was quantified (e.g., screen time, frequency of social media access, specific apps) and the precise instruments used to measure physical fitness beyond the VO2Max result. Crucially, the abstract does not describe any statistical analysis or presentation of results that would link the different categories of gadget use to varying levels of physical fitness, which is essential to establish an "effect" or even a correlation. The reported findings indicate a concerning trend: a significant proportion of students exhibit high to very high gadget use, while their overall physical fitness level is predominantly in the medium category. This juxtaposition strongly implies a potential inverse relationship, which the full paper should robustly explore. To strengthen the conclusion and provide actionable insights, future iterations or the complete paper should detail the statistical methods employed to analyze the relationship between these two variables. If the methodology was purely descriptive, the discussion should carefully avoid implying a causal "effect" and instead focus on describing observed patterns and potential areas for intervention. Overall, the work contributes to identifying a significant area for concern and serves as a valuable starting point for deeper investigation into adolescent health in the digital era.
