Abstract

Mantra masih dipercaya hingga saat ini, khususnya di Kalimantan Timur. Salah satu keberadaan penutur mantra dan mantranya, dapat ditemukan pada masyarakat suku Kutai, di Muara Kedang, Desa Sungai Mariam, Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara, Kalimantan Timur. Dalam konteks mantra, simbol-simbol yang digunakan tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai alat retorika atau estetika linguistik, tetapi juga mengandung makna kultural dan spiritual yang mendalam. Oleh karena itu, tujuan penelitian ini yaitu analisis mantra suku Kutai menggunakan pendekatan semiotik Roland Barthes; makna denotasi, konotasi dan mitos, serta fungsi mantra. Metode penelitian yang digunakan kualitatif deskriptif. Teknik pengumpulan data yaitu wawancara serta studi pustaka. Teknik analisis data berupa kondensasi data, penyajian data, penarikan kesimpulan, hingga verifikasi data. Hasil temuan penelitian yaitu ada beberapa jenis mantra; Mantra belas kasihan, Mantra Pagar Diri, Mantra Grecek, Mantra Ndik Benapsu, Mantra Wisa, Mantra Penghilang Kembung Anak, dan Mantra Penyengat. Empat fungsi mantra yang ditemukan yaitu sebagai proyeksi/menggambarkan kepercayaan masyarakat, menjadi alat pengesah pranata serta lembaga kebudayaan, sarana pendidikan, dan alat untuk menegakkan norma serta mengendalikan perilaku anggota masyarakat. Kepercayaan terhadap fungsi mantra dibangun secara kuat melalui bahasa simbolik dan penuh makna emosional.

This research makes a valuable contribution to the fields of anthropology, linguistics, and semiotics by offering an in-depth analysis of an often-overlooked aspect of indigenous belief systems in Indonesia. While the study effectively outlines the types and functions of mantras, future work could potentially delve deeper into the specific linguistic features and poetic structures that contribute to their emotional resonance, or explore historical shifts in their usage and interpretation. Nevertheless, this paper provides a robust foundation for understanding the intricate relationship between language, belief, and social structure within the Kutai community, highlighting the enduring power of oral traditions in shaping cultural identity and societal cohesion.
