LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English. The concept of moral bioenhancement was initially proposed by theorists in response to bioconservative critiques of the human enhancement project; later, it was advanced as the basis for an initiative to improve human beings’ moral behaviour by directly regulating the human brain. By critically examining the assumptions of this initiative, this article aims to show that it is impossible to enhance human morality merely through neurobiological intervention in the human brain, given the intrinsic nature of human cognition and human morality. Therefore, the moral bioenhancement initiative not only simplifies our understanding of morality and its position in human life but is also misleading, due to its commitment to an extreme version of reductionism.
The article, "神經本質主義與道德生物增強的困境" (The Dilemma of Neuro-Essentialism and Moral Bioenhancement), tackles a highly pertinent and complex issue at the intersection of philosophy, ethics, and neurobiology: moral bioenhancement. The authors position their work as a critical response to the initiative advocating for direct neural regulation to improve moral behavior, an idea that emerged from debates around human enhancement. The core thesis is that this initiative fundamentally misunderstands the intrinsic nature of human cognition and morality, asserting that neurobiological interventions alone cannot enhance human morality and are therefore simplistic and misleading due to an extreme commitment to reductionism. A significant strength of this paper, as outlined in the abstract, lies in its commitment to a critical examination of the foundational assumptions underpinning moral bioenhancement. By asserting that a proper understanding of human cognition and morality is essential to this critique, the article promises a nuanced philosophical argument against purely neuro-reductionist approaches to ethical improvement. This approach is crucial for pushing back against overly simplistic interpretations of complex human phenomena and for safeguarding a holistic view of morality that extends beyond mere biological mechanisms. The paper's explicit aim to expose the reductionist pitfalls of the moral bioenhancement initiative is a valuable contribution to the ongoing bioethical discourse. While the abstract provides a compelling summary of the article's critical stance, the full paper would likely delve into the precise definitions of "intrinsic nature of human cognition and human morality" and how these preclude the efficacy of neurobiological interventions. The assertion of an "extreme version of reductionism" within the moral bioenhancement initiative also opens avenues for detailed philosophical analysis, demanding a clear delineation of what constitutes this extreme form and why it is problematic. This work has the potential to significantly shape the philosophical landscape concerning human enhancement, offering a robust counter-argument to technologically driven solutions for moral challenges and reinforcing the importance of a comprehensive ethical framework that acknowledges the multi-faceted dimensions of human moral agency.
