Abstract

Review

This paper, titled "Uma tragédia esquiliana: Os Persas," proposes an examination of Aeschylus' iconic play, *The Persians*. The abstract immediately situates the work within the profound historical context of Athens' struggle for freedom against the Persian threat. With its evocative and richly metaphorical language, the abstract effectively conveys the immense stakes involved, framing the conflict not merely as a military engagement but as an existential battle for survival and identity. The paper promises to delve into the foundational principles that underpinned Athenian resolve during this pivotal period. A particular strength suggested by the abstract is its comprehensive understanding of the "battlefield." It rightly emphasizes that the conflict extended far beyond conventional military encounters, encompassing the psychological, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of the war. The assertion that "the battlefield was not only the sacred sea, but mainly the innermost part of each conscience" is particularly compelling, hinting at a nuanced exploration of the internal struggles and collective spirit. Furthermore, the abstract's inclusion of "impropérios, preces e poemas" alongside spears and swords as instruments of engagement points towards a promising analysis of how cultural output, specifically poetry, functioned as a vital component of the resistance, thereby directly linking the historical context to Aeschylus' dramatic art. While the abstract admirably sets a vivid scene and highlights the broad thematic scope, it could benefit from a clearer articulation of the paper's specific analytical approach and its core argument regarding *The Persians*. The current description focuses heavily on the historical and philosophical context of the Greco-Persian Wars, rather than explicitly stating how Aeschylus' play itself is analyzed to illustrate these points. To strengthen its impact, the paper should clearly delineate its methodology for examining *The Persians* as an "Aeschylean tragedy" and articulate its specific contribution to existing scholarship on the play. This would ensure that the paper moves beyond a rich historical overview to offer a focused and original interpretation of Aeschylus' dramatic masterpiece.
