Feminist values refer to the basic principles that underlie the feminist movement and thought. These values emphasize gender equality, justice, and women's empowerment in various aspects of life. This qualitative study analyzes Okky Madasari's novel "Mata dan Nyala Api Purba" (Eyes and Ancient Flames). Data were obtained through text content analysis using a purposive sampling technique. Document analysis was used for data collection, while validity was maintained through triangulation of sources and methods. The analysis was conducted interactively to gain a deeper understanding of the liberal feminist values within the work. The analysis shows that the values of equal rights and opportunities are the most dominant aspect in the novel, with a frequency of 32%. This is reflected in the representation of female characters who have equal access and opportunities to men, both in private and public spaces. The value of individual independence is also prominent (25%), depicting women as figures capable of making decisions and acting independently. Furthermore, individual freedom and life choices are recorded at 21%, demonstrating the space for female characters to determine their own direction. Public participation reaches 14%, demonstrating women's involvement in the social and political spheres. Meanwhile, rejection of traditional gender roles emerged at 7%, demonstrating resistance to stereotypes that limit women's roles in society. Overall, the five components of liberal feminist values in this novel demonstrate that Mata dan Nyala Api Purba (The Eyes and the Ancient Flame) is imbued with the spirit of emancipation and gender equality. Therefore, this literary work can be used as a learning resource to enrich understanding of feminist values within the context of Indonesian culture.
This study undertakes a timely analysis of "Mata dan Nyala Api Purba" by Okky Madasari, investigating the manifestation of feminist values within this contemporary Indonesian novel. Utilizing a qualitative approach centered on text content analysis, the research systematically unpacks various components of liberal feminist thought. The abstract clearly outlines the methodology, including purposive sampling, document analysis, and triangulation, which collectively bolster the study's validity. By focusing on a specific literary work, the research effectively bridges theoretical feminist principles with their practical representation in narrative, offering valuable insights into how these ideas resonate within an Indonesian cultural context. A significant strength of this research lies in its clear categorization and quantitative breakdown of liberal feminist values identified within the novel. The detailed presentation of findings, highlighting the dominance of equal rights and opportunities (32%), individual independence (25%), and freedom of life choices (21%), provides compelling empirical evidence for the claims made. The inclusion of public participation (14%) and rejection of traditional gender roles (7%) further enriches the analysis, painting a comprehensive picture of the novel's emancipatory spirit. This structured approach not only enhances the rigor of the qualitative analysis but also makes the findings accessible and easily digestible for readers interested in both literary criticism and feminist studies. While the study offers a robust analysis of liberal feminist values, the abstract could benefit from a clearer justification for exclusively focusing on the liberal branch of feminism, given the broader initial introduction of "feminist values." Expanding on the "interactive analysis" methodology would also provide a deeper understanding of the interpretive process. Nevertheless, the research successfully demonstrates the novel's potential as a valuable educational resource for understanding feminist concepts, thereby contributing meaningfully to both literary scholarship and gender studies in Indonesia. Future research might consider an intersectional lens to explore how these liberal feminist values interact with other identity markers within the novel.
