Review

This article proposes an engaging and pertinent investigation into the historical and contemporary significance of the Siti Hinggil Site in Muncar. By examining its evolution from a strategic maritime observation post during the Blambangan Kingdom era to its current role in supporting the social, cultural, and economic fabric of coastal communities, the paper offers a rich interdisciplinary perspective. The blend of historical analysis with an understanding of present-day community dynamics is particularly commendable, promising valuable insights into the enduring legacy of such sites. The research employs a robust methodological approach, combining literature study, interviews, direct observation, and archival analysis, which is well-suited to uncover the multifaceted functions and values of Siti Hinggil. The findings highlight the site's critical historical role in sea traffic observation and ship surveillance, alongside its function as a center for customary and social activities, emphasizing its intricate connection to traditional community life. Crucially, the paper underscores the site's continued importance in strengthening social ties and cultural sustainability, even amidst modernization. The claimed novelty, stressing the site's historical and social value as a learning resource for past maritime roles and its preservation in the socio-economic context of Muncar, presents a compelling argument for its relevance. While the abstract effectively outlines the site's diverse functions and its transformation, the full paper would benefit from a more detailed exploration of the specific challenges and opportunities presented by "modernisation and economic dynamics" on Siti Hinggil's preservation and its community engagement. Furthermore, elaborating on the "ancient design" and how it explicitly reflects traditional functions would enhance the depth of historical analysis. Nevertheless, the research appears to make a significant contribution to understanding regional maritime history and heritage conservation, successfully bridging the past and present to advocate for the crucial role of historical sites in contemporary community identity and development.
