Abstract

This study attempts to examine how the 2019 David Michod film "The King" depicts revolt and the monarchical order. The film tells the tale of Prince Hal, who succeeds his father, King Henry IV, as King Henry V. Hal had to deal with a number of difficulties as a young monarch, such as disagreements with disobedient noblemen. Qualitative approaches are the primary tool used in this study. The 2019 film "The King" serves as the primary source of data. The process of gathering data involved reading, observing, recognizing, categorizing, and choosing pertinent information. As part of the data analysis process, the data were presented, clarified, and interpreted using conflict theory. According to the findings, the film portrays the monarchical system of medieval Europe, in which the king, who holds the throne for successive generations, possesses ultimate power. The film also depicts insurrection brought on by dissatisfaction with the king's choices. In addition, the movie looks at how unrest could be sparked by instability and discontent inside the royal circle.

Review

The submitted work, "The Representation of Monarchism and Rebellion: Power Struggles Depicted in The King (2019) Movie," presents a focused qualitative analysis of a contemporary historical drama. The study aims to explore the depiction of monarchical order and revolt within David Michod's 2019 film, *The King*, centering on the challenges faced by Prince Hal as he ascends to the throne as King Henry V. The chosen topic is timely, given the enduring fascination with historical narratives and their cinematic interpretations, offering a relevant lens into the societal dynamics of power and dissent in medieval Europe as presented through film. The abstract clearly outlines the film's premise and the study's primary objective. Methodologically, the paper relies on qualitative approaches, utilizing the specified film as its primary data source. The process of data gathering, which includes reading, observing, recognizing, categorizing, and selecting pertinent information, is appropriate for a film-centric analysis, aiming to extract relevant instances of monarchical representation and rebellion. The application of conflict theory to interpret the data is a commendable choice, providing a theoretical framework to analyze the power struggles and dissatisfactions depicted. The findings, as summarized, indicate a successful identification of how the film portrays the ultimate power of the monarch, the roots of insurrection stemming from dissatisfaction with royal choices, and internal instability within the royal circle, suggesting a thorough descriptive analysis of these key themes. While the study offers a clear descriptive account of the film's portrayal, the abstract could benefit from a more explicit articulation of its unique scholarly contribution beyond merely outlining what is evident in the film's narrative. The application of conflict theory, for instance, appears to primarily serve as a descriptive lens rather than a tool for deeper analytical insights or novel interpretations of the film's political commentary. Further detail on *how* data was "recognized, categorized, and chosen" would enhance methodological transparency. Future iterations might consider engaging with existing film theory on historical representation or cinematic power dynamics to provide a more robust theoretical grounding, discussing the broader implications of these cinematic representations of power struggles, beyond merely identifying them, to elevate the study's scholarly impact.
