Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to analyze and expose the theocracy in the book of Daniel, then use it as a reference for the principle of obedience to the executive government towards a decision on the proposed change in the nomenclature of Isa Almasih to Jesus Christ. Because there is very little or no research that links the theocracy of the book of Daniel with the issue of changing the nomenclature of Isa Almasih to Jesus Christ. The method used is content analysis. Thus, the book of Daniel will be analyzed, especially the theme of theocracy in it and then the pattern of theocracy will be constructed based on the findings. The pattern is then used as a principle of obedience to the government's decision regarding the proposed change in the nomenclature of Isa Almasih to Jesus Christ. As a result, the theocracy building constructed from the book of Daniel has effectiveness for His chosen people personally and communally, which has an apocalyptic dimension and is strongly tied to eschatological expectations. This cannot be separated from the Jewish tradition that is closely related to theocracy. This research can enrich the discourse on theocracy for Christians in particular through the perspective of the book of Daniel and can be used as a principle of obedience to the executive government's decision on a decision.

Review

The paper "Teokrasi dalam Kitab Daniel sebagai Rujukan Prinsip Ketaatan pada Keputusan Pemerintah Eksekutif" proposes an ambitious and highly specific research agenda. It aims to analyze the concept of theocracy within the Book of Daniel and subsequently construct a principle of obedience to executive government decisions, specifically in the context of a proposed nomenclature change from "Isa Almasih" to "Jesus Christ." The author posits that existing research rarely, if ever, connects Danielic theocracy to such a contemporary issue. Utilizing content analysis, the study intends to derive a pattern of theocracy from the biblical text, which is then to be applied as a guiding principle for Christian obedience. The abstract highlights the resulting "theocracy building" as effective for God's chosen people, possessing apocalyptic and eschatological dimensions rooted in Jewish tradition, thereby enriching theological discourse and providing a framework for civil obedience. While the paper's premise of linking ancient biblical principles to modern governance is intriguing, several critical aspects require significant clarification and robust justification. Foremost, the abstract's assertion that the Book of Daniel serves as a "reference principle of obedience to the executive government" stands in potential tension with the narrative content of Daniel, which famously features instances of principled *disobedience* by Daniel and his companions to royal decrees that conflicted with their religious convictions (e.g., dietary laws, idol worship, prayer). The methodology must meticulously explain how a text often cited for civil disobedience to idolatrous commands can yield a principle of *obedience* to governmental decisions, especially regarding a sensitive matter of religious nomenclature. Furthermore, the leap from the apocalyptic and eschatological dimensions of ancient Jewish theocracy to a contemporary executive decision requires an extremely careful and nuanced hermeneutical bridge. The abstract mentions the "effectiveness" of this constructed theocracy for "His chosen people" in personal and communal aspects; however, the criteria for this effectiveness and how it directly translates into a principle for a specific nomenclature change remain largely unaddressed. Clarification is also needed on whether the paper advocates for obedience to *any* government decision or specifies conditions, given the historical context of Daniel. The proposed research attempts to bridge a significant gap by applying biblical studies to a highly specific and contemporary issue relevant to Indonesian Christian communities. Its originality in identifying this unique linkage is commendable. However, for this paper to be compelling and academically sound, it must thoroughly address the critical questions raised regarding hermeneutical consistency, the precise nature of "obedience" derived from the Book of Daniel, and the robust justification for transferring ancient Near Eastern theocratic principles to a modern, pluralistic governmental context. A detailed exploration of how the proposed "pattern of theocracy" specifically informs the decision regarding nomenclature change, especially in light of the Book of Daniel's narratives of non-compliance, is essential. With substantial revisions focusing on clarifying these methodological and theological ambiguities, particularly regarding the inherent tension between obedience and principled resistance in Daniel, this research holds the potential to offer a valuable, albeit controversial, contribution to the discourse on civil theology and Christian ethics.
